2023 PSU Waiting for Decisions

ALL students apply to Smeal during junior year.
Nobody’s ‘in’ until they’ve taken specific classes and been awarded specific grades in “entrance to major” classes.
ALL take the same classes and have to get the same grades.
DUS and Smeal students both can join business or entrepreneurship SLOs (living learning communities).
The only differences are 1) the high level honors students (3.9uw, 1480 SAT, serious EC) can get into the business honors program called Sapphire 2) pre admits have a Smeal adviser.
But DUS can get into Schreyer, even if they can’t get into Sapphire. So it’s very minimal as far as advantages go.
So the big difference is having a general adviser or a Smeal adviser.
For almost everything there’s no difference.

Dear ahrumom

Sam will be receiving a decision from Penn State soon! The best place for Sam to check the decision status is through the MyPennState account.

Students who qualified for the priority review deadline of November 30 will have a decision no later than January 31!

Samantha will receive the decision first in the MyPennState account, which updates daily. Any questions regarding admission decisions can be sent to admissions@psu.edu.

Sincerely,

Penn State Undergraduate Admissions

do you think we will get a positive decision…

btw, she applied oct 30th…but sadly, her SAT scores came in 10 days after…was told she was in the running for nov poll…had no idea that SAT scores would take longer to arrive…

been reading up a lot from past post…wow, you guys give me hope…crossing fingers…we love penn state…but also prepare to hear the worse as well…

Thank you everyone…

I am still under review. What does this mean?

@scam0018 check the portal around 12:01am. That’s when it usually updates. Since the Admissions Office closed around 4:30pm today and will be closed tomorrow, I suspect that there will be one additional upd

UPDATE: Did anyone else who got a deferral receive the following letter in the mail
“Thank you for applying to Penn State. We have evaluated your application materials and are deferring your admission decision at this time. You will receive your next decision from us by January 31.
This defferal will not negatively affect your admission evaluation. It is simply a change in the timing to ensure that the next decision we make on your application provides you with the greatest chance of being admitted to Penn State.
Please review admissions.psu/Early Action for frequently asked questions. No further action is required by you at this time.
We appreciate your patience as we continue to review your application.”

Not sure how true this is, but I’ve heard that PSU was inundated with EA applications, which is why it has taken so long for many to hear back and why there are so many deferrals.
Also, it seems that very high stat kids heard back very quickly.

Multiple sources have reported that Admissions Representatives stated Early Action will still receive priority over Regular Decision regardless of receiveing a defferal. With that being said, all Early Action should still be hearing first in the Regular Decision round.

@collegegirl2023 Not necessarily true. I know someone who applied regular (11/2) and heard back (12/5).

It depends on the major you applied for, too - if your major hasn’t filled up at all you can receive a quick decision.

@Specialist009 should be end of February,
There’s one day they make the announcement

someone in my school that has a 4.3 GPA and As in every stem class along with a 1480 SAT and National Merit semifinalist just got sent to the 2+2 for engineering

also instate

@CollegeisRough Wow, really? And clearly they’ve accepted lower than that at UP for engineering.

@CollegeisRough What about ECs?

@kansha ECs don’t matter much if at all for Penn State admissions. I’m wondering if the particular engineering major was already filled at UP. @CollegeisRough Is s/he planning to ask for reevaluation for DUS? Was s/he able/willing to start in the summer?

@kidzncatz Isn’t it a bit early for a major to fill up? With such high stats there has to be some other red flag on that application…

@kansha I don’t really know, but it was the only explanation I could think of. I do know that the valedictorian of my D17’s HS class, with an SAT of 1540, applied rather late and was waitlisted at Penn State (I think for Smeal).

I am confused, I applied early action. They told me I should hear by 12/24 but now it’s January and nothing yet. I haven’t been deferred or anything either. I’m concerned they forgot about me.

@CalinAmry Unless you received a ‘rejection’ or ‘denied’ on your MyPennState status page, then you were deferred. The office re-opened today and I suspect the decision making will fire up either this evening or tomorrow evening. All EA applicants will hear something no later than 1/31 so hang tight.
