They probably thought nobody would notice. But we are all crazy people clicking refresh repeatedly, so we are on to them.
dude i can’t believe Penn state is so messed up this year. One of my friends from China applied two months later than me, and got accepted into UP Engineering school after few days.
My portal showed the same change from deferred to an update has been made to the thing about the checklist to now under review again.
It’s so bizarre. This entire admissions cycle for penn state has been an absolute mess.
My oh my, what a mess. I’ve said this before, regardless of the outcome for my son, I have very little faith in the process. Nobody deserves this roller coaster, especially students waiting to find out about their future.
Aside from the long wait hearing from PSU, anyone else applied to Rutgers? Talk about not having their act together - one unannounced wave of decisions week before Christmas and now one month later no updates. So this is not limited to PSU. Maybe a Big10 issue.

Today mine status has changed at least three times. Was defered. Then to check back soon as status has changed. Now says "We have received everything required to complete your application. Once a decision is made, it will be posted here. " Really ? Giving up. Think my son was right to wait for the snail mail.
Maybe ice from the storm got into the computer lines.
I am curious to know… Did anyone who got waitlisted choose “Summer Option”?

After giving the series of portal changes some thought, it seems that when they moved some of the applicants out of the Deferral message que, they cycled through the system (quickly) the same messages everyone received from the time they submitted the original application. The “checklist message” telling us to check back for items that may be requested and then the application under review which many are seeing now. The exception is the odd message about high volume of supplemental information.
At this point, once again, its all speculation. Hopefully all answers will be out by the 31st!
So I had the “your application has been updated. Please check back soon for a status update.” But now (2 hours later, (granted was just wasting time while waiting for a haircut) it says "Your application is currently under review. We have received everything required to complete your application. Once a decision has been made, it will be posted here. This is after it was the EA deferred to priority decision by January 31 notice that has been there from 12/24 through to this morning. We applied in August EA. Not blaming them since it is not 1/31 but this is a roller coaster! After I thought they only updated once a day. Not going to read into just still feeling hopeful we will hear by 1/31 so we can move on one way or another.
It almost looks like they thinned out the pile with the waitlisted and then started the process all over with the remaining applicants. The remaining folks seem to be cycling through the status sequence of a new applicant.
It also seems that the office didn’t close due to the ice storm. Changes have been occurring after that closure time. OT for the admissions staff!

First of all @MyaCocoa I am really surprised that your child didn’t get in…yet. A few others gave good advice which is basically that you can accept at a commonwealth campus (Altoona, Harrisburg or Erie are all colleges in their own right), or you can wait on the wait list, or or you can move on and leave Penn State behind - and I wouldn’t blame you if you did. The last door is to be called and ask if being reconsidered for another major is possible.
About the portal changes…YEESH…That is frustrating I am sure for all of you waiting. This is why they don’t release decisions all at once because even when they don’t, the portal crashes or has errors. This happens every year too but it’s no less annoying. The hope is that they get the status right fast and soon.
As I pointed out the other day, they do update the portal more than once a day when it gets closer…even if they say they don’t. They’ve already updated it a bunch just today.
Waitlist…It’s new to be waitlisted this early. Penn State messed up royally by offering EA and Common App this year. If they are waitlisting people already, I cannot imagine what the common data set will show for # of students applied this year. The accepted and enrolled yield will likely remain the same, but that just means a whole lot more kids will be denied than usual. That’s frustrating. The common app should AT LEAST have an essay so that kids who aren’t that interested can’t just randomly apply.
According to the common data set for last year (I think), no one on the waitlist was accepted. But from two years before that, nearly everyone was. I think because of the common app, they will be able to take a lot of people off of waitlist because they will have a lot not attending that were accepted. I’m not sure I’d continue to wait…maybe on the back burner while you move ahead with another school (in this case, justified).

@pama3115 I am now waiting for my son’s “wait list” portal to change to the “high volume of supporting materials”!!! Haha! But seriously, such an obvious set of mistakes makes me wonder how much of what we’re getting is the right message for the student in question.
