@vamom4 You are correct about Common App. Common App was not available for Penn State Applicants at the beginning of August. Not sure when it became available as an application option. As far as essays, my S applied to Schreyer Honors College in addition to the his EA application. Schreyer requires 3 additional essays which gave him the opportunity to really demonstrate more of who he is and what he has accomplished leading up college. My understanding is that these additional essays and the required Recommendation Letters (2), flow through the overall admissions department so hopefully they will take that into consideration (not just for the Honors School).
@momof2inpa same hereâŠDUS, summer option etc.
@pama3115 I watched a fairly recent video online (produced by PSU) with the Admissions Director and Honors College Director, and she advised that those essays were strictly for the Honors college consideration after the candidate cleared regular admissions.
Iâm glad that admissions is able to field phone calls
Thanks to all for sharing direct info
Expanding on what @jcs1918 wrote earlier today: âOne thing she also added was that if he accepted the 2+2 program now, he would not be eligible for the wait list for UP.â
My S decided to agree to the Wait List. This is the whole message that comes up. I hope this helps someone.
(begin quote) "Thank you for accepting our invitation to be on the University Park Wait List. You will remain under consideration for University Park admission if space becomes available. Our goal is to notify you as soon as possible about your admission decision, but no later than May 15.
If space does not become available for admission to University Park, we will contact you regarding an offer of admission to an alternate campus choice, and we will help you explore your Penn State options.
At any time you may choose to remove yourself from the Wait List and be offered admission to a campus other than University Park by contacting us at admissions@psu.edu." (end quote)
So the way I take both this message and the previous poster is that: 1) You have something possibly to lose if you go right now for 2+2, and 2) You seem to have NOTHING to lose by choosing to Wait.
Maybe Iâm reading it wrong, but it sounds like my son is actually admitted already to PSU - as long as he chooses another campus. And that this wonât change if he hangs around on the wait list for some period of time.
What do you all think?
Some of the applicants admitted with lower stats could be due to race, gender, country, major, etc. for diversity purposes.
@MyaCocoa It seems 2+2 is always the option and most schools require a commitment by 5/1 including PSU. So doesnât hurt to have accepted the waitlist. Fingers crossed for you and your son.
WANT TO CALL ATTENTION TO MY POST JUST TWO ABOVE.
Please read that one! I am beginning to think that all of the Wait Lists from yesterday are actually ADMITS.
So, this would mean⊠I donât know what it means! But we are feeling for sure admitted to PSU today.
University Park?
@MyaCocoa if your message was the same as my sonâs, yes youâre admitted to one of the other PSU campuses.
@MyaCocoa I read that email as (1) Heâs accepted to a commonwealth campus, however if youâd like he can (2) wait to see if space opens up at UP campus and (3) if he waits and he isnât given a spot at UP, he can still work with PSU to go to a commonwealth campus.
We are OOS
What I find aggravating is that RD students were accepted before some EA students were even considered and now EA students are being wait-listed b/c there isnât room at UP.
On the common data set it defines wait-list as â(students who met admission requirements but whose final admission was contingent on space availability).â So doesnât this mean that the wait-listed kids were felt to be qualified for admission but there was no room at UP? If the EA kids had been considered before the RD, then there wouldâve been space. Shouldnât the EA students have been looked at first?
I have 2 kids that applied EA (we are OOS). Very similar stats but applied to different majors on the same day before the EA deadline. One was wait-listed, the other is under review. I donât think there really is any rhyme or reason to how they are looking at applications.
Has anyone who was deferred get a decision other than waitlist?
What @jlhpsu posted is our understand as well. We accepted the wait list and received the same message that @MyaCocoa posted previously Double checked with Admissions again and was advised that (1) yes - he is admitted to PSU, but to a commonwealth campus (2) the wait list is for possible placement at UP campus (3) if he does not get admitted to University Park, he will still be offered to start at a commonwealth campus.
D received her acceptance to nursing last Thursday. We are in state. She was deferred to 1/31 after applying EA.
Mine still says under review. Do you think if we werenât waitlisted yesterday we will be either accepted or denied by Jan 31st?
@snickers1234 I too am mystified as to what role date applied plays in considering applications in relation to each other in light of wait lists forming now
Just saw on the decision thread that three high scoring students were waitlisted recently . SAT of 1480 and 1550. ACT of 33. What the heck- such great scores. Good luck on their endeavors as I am sure they will have scholarship offers. Bracing myself for the waitlist. OOS.
Does anyone know if theyâll be working over the weekend?
