2023 PSU Waiting for Decisions

@ww4397 I doubt decisions will be released over the weekend - maybe tonight since today was a working day. I’m going to check after midnight but not holding my breath.

My daughter was waitlisted as well today.

Top 5% in her class
We were shocked!

@amyal3214 sorry! Mind sharing stats?
When applied, what major, common ap
So many with good stats are being wait listed
Hope it works out for u

@jlhpsu my daughter applied early action with 1380 SAT and top 5% of her class and was just waitlisted! We never expected that.

can you share stats?

@amyal3214 I really don’t know what to say and I don’t think anyone really can say what is happening this year. What major did she apply to? What was her GPA? Did she apply via common app or direct app with Penn State?

All I can think of is that they either got SO many new applications this year that some majors are filled much earlier than usual, or they are waitlisting students to determine who is actually interested so that they can figure out how many serious applicants they have left vs. applicants who just applied via common app because they could and aren’t really interested in going to Penn State. Either way, I think accepting common app and EA this year was a very bad idea from Penn State and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they do away with at least one of them next year. Not that that helps anyone this year though -

Those who applied EA, and are still waiting for an answer… Would you mind replying with “What Application Process” and whether you’re In State or OOS. Thanks!

My son applied via Penn State App and is In State

Wait over…my son wanted Architecture but were told they filled the slots so was offered Landscape Architecture spot… Disappointed

I’m not sure what the point was of having EA. If you scroll through the thread about admissions decisions, many who were accepted applied rolling, not EA. Now it sounds like majors are filling while not all EAs have received decisions. I thought the whole point of applying EA was that your application would be considered before non EA applicants? That does not appear to be the case, based on the thread about decisions, and based on what has happened with my D and friends. The friends who applied rolling have their decisions already, but my DD, who applied EA, was deferred in Dec., and still hasn’t heard anything. It’s very frustrating and makes me wonder how much PSU has their act together. I understand this is the first year for the common app and for EA for them, but it’s not like these are new concepts so they should have had some idea of what the influx would be and taken measures to handle that.

@242mom Totally agree! At a minimum they should have went through all the EAs first. I get that there was an influx with the introduction of the Common App and there are tons of kids just randomly adding Penn State and other schools on the whim to their list of applications - however at least address the issue of those truly making the EA deadline instead of taking the route of consolidating the EA, Priority, and rolling decisions in one basket. I really question the point of EA. Hell, if Penn State offered ED I would have suggested that to my son. At least you have a commitment for students that have PSU as their top choice.

Application under review

Seems like more than a few Engineering Applicants still waiting!

Wait list seems to mean that if there was space in your major selection at UP, u would be admitted

And u can wait or accept a branch 2+2 which still gets u to UP eventually
@MyaCocoa posted that for her son and her, that’s an admit and still hope for fall UP

That makes sense imho

My d is still EA and under review since 8/15

EA only means that our application is under review until a decision is made, admit, deny, defer and now they added wait list

Admissions is overwhelmed but I think we should not be looking at the decisions only admits and thinking that because some of the stats posted or dates applied posted are surprising that it means EA is meaningless

I am realizing that choice of pre Major is a much bigger factor than we knew when we applied and from how psu presents it on the admissions website imo

Reading posts here in waiting fir decisions and reading decisions only admits seems clear that the choice of major is a decisive factor

Slots are filling for some majors so higher stats are wait listed, other majors that have less competition accept students with much lower stats

But remember that the common data set shows us who had actually enrolled in the past, the average gpa at UP 2017 was 3.58 and the average sat and gpa scores were lower than the admitted student scores which are featured on the admissions website

So imo, up to you of course, but if you really want psu UP and you get wait listed that is still much better than deny!

Admissions told a poster that they believe that spots will open to the wait listed before May

I think that makes sense because as someone posted the wait list may weed out a lot of applicants who don’t actually want psu as first choice

Can’t believe I’m defending the process but fair is fair lol

Also I have been practicing what to say to my d if she gets wait listed after her 2 best friends with lower stats but easy to get in majors applied EA but after she did and were accepted last November!
Neither had psu as even top 3 choice
