2024-25 FAFSA question

Agree…call!

Thank you!

Me too. Getting this type of message from several universities. I am guessing it is because our app is stuck at “in review” so they have no way of knowing it is complete. Now that the “late January” time frame is moved to March, possibly stuck here awhile. Very stressful.

Even though the FAFSA will not be released to colleges until mid March, do you have any idea if the processing will be completed prior so that those of us who have to make a correction or an edit can do so in advance of them being sent to colleges mid March?

I am even more worried, knowing that we have to make a correction and hoping that the ability to edit/correct is not post mid March. I am really just hoping that the edit functionality wI’ll be made available at some point in the next several weeks.

Corrections can’t be be made until the FAFSA is processed, here it says ‘first half of March’:

Thank you very much for this. I appreciate you getting me to the right page that addresses edits, and corrections.

One point of clarification (If you do not mind helping a novice), what would be the definition of ‘processed’? I am thinking that in prior years, we had the opportunity to edit prior to it being sent to the colleges- But I’m guessing ‘processed’ may mean that the FAFSA has already been sent to the colleges.

Given the timeline, it appears that the FAFSA will be released to colleges and to students (allowing corrections) at the same time. You can make corrections as soon as that is allowed & those corrections will be sent to colleges pretty quickly. The corrected FAFSA will override the original FAFSA in the school’s system.

Thank you

After my S24 submitted FAFSA, he got an estimate of SAI at -985 or so. I was fairly certain (to the point of looking up the document and calculating the SAI myself) that our parent assets put him at an SAI out of Pell Grant range. And I thought I did my parent part pretty carefully.

Has anyone else experienced their estimate to be pretty off? Or might I be missing something?

Our AGI is pretty close to Pell range, but savings should make our SAI higher.

Two concerns: 1. The schools that received the CSS profile will see a mismatch in the two documents and want further documentation.

  1. The schools that use only the FAFSA might grant an unsubstantiated amount of aid that would be rescinded the following years?

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer

@5Rios, assuming there is not a mistake, (and assuming you didn’t mistakenly check “free lunch”), the most likely explanation is that your AGI was at a level that meant assets were automatically not counted on FAFSA (see 2nd post by “kelsmom” in this thread), so you would get some (full?) Pell and maybe other Fed aid. You should look into the criteria and verify this.

Your assets will still be counted for CSS though.

Thank you, @BrownRiceS24D27D29 and @kelsmom.

So our AGI is below $60,000, but we did file 1040 Schedules B, C, D. Not sure if there may be thresholds for FAFSA assets on B&D schedules (as you said there is on C). On C less than $10,000 (only a few hundred dollars). On B, around $3500. On D, a loss.

The FAFSA did ask me to fill in my assets. It just reported to my son, then, that he is eligible for a Pell.

Thank you, again, for the kind help.

@5Rios, what is your family size?
Look here Prior HHS Poverty Guidelines and Federal Register References | ASPE at table entry for year 2022 to see Federal Poverty Level (FPL) for given family size: $13,590 for first person plus $4,720 for each additional person.
E.g. for a family of 5 this FPL=$13590+4times$4720=$32470.
Now multiply that by 175%=1.75 to get
1.75times$32470=$56822.50.
For a family of 5 (redo calculation for other family size) if your AGI is below this number then you would get automatic full Pell, SAI zero (or less), and assets don’t count (and the schedules B, D etc are irrelevant).

I explain this here 2024 Federal Poverty Levels out now: FAFSA/Pell implications for 5-figure incomes

Again, your assets will still be counted for CSS, which could lower aid from that, but regardless of that, you get what you get from FAFSA.

Oh wait, I see this. I can’t tell what’s happening in your specific case, and whether or not your assets are really supposed to be counted on FAFSA. I’m making general comments about my understanding of how it works.

I’m so grateful for your taking the time to share your insights with me.

Our AGI is just above 175% the 2022 HHS Poverty Guidelines for a family of four.

I had also wondered if our low AGI might trigger a situation where they did not consider assets, but I would have guessed that would have meant they didn’t ask for our checking, savings, and investment numbers. Not sure if there is some other trigger at work that I haven’t found.

There also may just have been a glitch that needs correcting (in March, when that becomes possible). Or maybe I just dropped a zero or something, though I thought I was uber careful.

Again, thanks.

Has anyone who has a parent that does not have a SSN been able to complete FAFSA? I’ve been trying to help my mom reach FSA to try to get her account verified. We sent the attestation form they gave, and on the form it said that we’ll receive a confirmation email within 1-3 business days. It has been a month. Apparently, when I called FSA for a follow-up, they said the 14-days period has passed so the only way the issue can be resolved is through the Help Desk. I have been calling FSA countless times, and every time they try to transfer me to the Help Desk, I get disconnected before I even get connected. Is anyone facing a similar issue? Or does anyone know what I should do next, aside from continuing calling FSA until I reach the Help Desk?

@nmxsel is your mom not a U.S. citizen? I guess what I’m asking is…why doesn’t she have a SS number?

nope, she is not

And your dad isn’t either?

he is

If your parents are married, and your dad has a SS number, why not have him be the parent for your FAFSA?
