21yrs old applying for college;recommendation letters?

I’m 21years old planning for college 2012.

Read through college application requirements and got a question:

Do I need to get recommendation letters from my highschool teachers?

It has been almost three years since I graduated; it wouldn’t be a big deal to contact a couple of teachers who knew me well and ask them for recommendation letters
but there’s a substantial gap between the time the teachers knew me and my current state .

Requirements are requirements, but since my case is a bit different from that of most of the other potential applicants, maybe the college administers would demand some other form of representation.

I’ve sent out emails to colleges pertaining to this inquiry but till now they haven’t responded.

it would be greatly appreciated if someone exprienced can give answer to my quandry.

Some colleges state after age 18 you may not need a recommendation but if you do the school will tell you. They will probably send something in the mail if anything else is needed.
