Hey, first time poster here.

I got a 2260 on my SAT (studied my keppelah off) but I unfortunately have a 3.0 GPA. I’ve never been much of a student, plus my school is very competitive (top 50 nationwide) so, yanno, it’s hard. Also my dad died beginning of sophomore year so that’s messed me up a ton and made me really depressed and whatnot. I mentioned al this in my applications.

My question is do I have a chance to get into some good school like UC Berkeley, Swarthmore, UCLA, UChicago? These are my reaches.

Also, how important is it to get good grades this year? I mean I coooould get 4.0/3.5’s across the board but it’s hard, and i don’t want to, and Diablo 3 is coming out. If it would really help a ton I guess I could buckle down and study up.

Thanks! ^^

I’m guessing you’re a junior?
A 2260 is a great score. A 3.0, however, will limit your college options. How does your GPA compare to your classmates? How rigorous is your course load?

What will definitely help is if your GPA this year jumps up. If you try for all A’s in your courses this year, it will bump up your GPA. That, in combination with an explanation for why your grades slipped sophomore year, will greatly help you.

Yes, it may be hard, but if you really want to go to your top choice schools, that’s what it’s going to take. You’ve got to be willing to study to earn a spot over many other qualified applicants. And I would also recommend not purchasing Diablo 3 until after your junior year. It’ll just be another distraction.

If you’re not into working hard why aim for top schools where youll have to work?

Expect your admissions to reflect your GPA much more than your scores,

Just as GPA loses weight without an SAT to back it up, the SAT loses weight without the GPA to back it up!! IF you show an upward trend and kick it into gear this year, admissions offices will take notice
