My first job in New York after college was working for Oscar at a firm called Reich and Tang. His old partner, Joe Reich, has been extremely generous to educational causes as well.

FWIT he’s a very nice guy.

(This is just what Andover needs: more money)

thats a lot :)

Ah, yes, fun is fun. I knew I recognized you from somewhere! The Daily Income Fund… I visited Reich and Tang (230 Park Avenue, the Helmsley Building) twice a day to bring over money and pick up money from this new-fangled financial product called a “mutual fund.” I was making $250/week for a summer job from high school and then college (I didn’t give that gig up until I graduated). I put all of my summer job savings into stocks (mostly Nabisco) and opened up a mutual fund account of my own. I parlayed that into an engagement ring and the bulk of a down payment for my first house, selling it all off 15 days before Black Monday. I love Oscar Tang!

You’re freaking me out but, Bingo. I was there from May of '80 'til early '82. Prior to leaving they moved to 200 Park but I loved the Helmsley building and my view straight up Park Ave. The Daily Income Fund (DIF) and don’t forget the Short term Income Fund (STIF). I still have a STIF coffee mug. Nice place to work.

I was there twice a day every summer and Christmas holidays from June '79 through August '81 or '82…after which I was promoted to the file room of the company I worked for. I “retired” from that gig in August '84 and cashed out in September '87, basically riding the entire 5 year bull market, including the RJR/Nabisco takeover.

Can you answer this question, f-i-f?: What became of Karen Silkwood?

Meryl Streep played her in the movie? Sorry, don’t remember her.
My VP’s were Leslie Jones and Bernadette Finn and I reported directly to Ms Terry Jones.
Started as a redemption clerk and later worked with our Transfer Agent, The Bank of New York. Got my Series 7 and moved on to a little firm called Lehman Brothers, Kuhn Loeb.

There was graffiti inside the tunnel/archway as you drove under/around the Helmsley Building. Just before your cab or car made the turn to navigate around Grand Central, there was this large message that read: “Karen Silkwood Was Murdered.” That creeped me out…and it wasn’t until 1983, when the movie came out, that I learned who Karen Silkwood was. You could see it from Park Avenue, from as far away as St. Bart’s, I think, if you peered into the arches. It always gave me chills. I had suspected it was some girl who was found dead on that spot, so I was disappointed that the movie reined in my wild and morbid imagination.

The things we remember…

Wow, so your paths really crossed. September '87, I was a new financial analyst at 85 Broad Street watching Telerate and Reuters monitors as stock prices tanked and bond prices went up. Bloomberg screens were not yet in existence. Did I see you (F-i-F and DM) drinking beer at South Street Seaport?

September '87, I wasn’t born. :D

That’s a 15 yard penalty on padroot for taunting.

Too bad 15 yards is the maximum penalty…
However, I remember about 20 years ago making those same comments to some friends of ours…they told me when they got married and I said “I was 5…” I guess it’s just payback.

Do you guys actually **KNOW **each other?

That would be too weird. Especially after all the verbal abuse!!!

Do any of us ever really “know” another person?

Ok fun, THAT deserves a penalty too! You must be an attorney…do I need to re-phrase that question? :)

Are we talking in a biblical sense? HMMMMMMM

D’yer – I was at Nabisco Brands during the F. Ross Johnson years. First at Standard Brands on 58th & Madison, and then a move to Ft. Oreo (Nabisco Brands) much to the chagrin of the NYC crew. I’m glad you benefited from that era. Here’s my bragging point on the 10/87 crash: A group of us bought Apple on black Monday when everyone was selling. We more than doubled our money in a few days and all felt very smug.

sugarkim – Congratulations to Andover on receiving such a generous donation!
