28 ACT composite; 36 in writing

Son got a 28 ACT score, (23 science, 26 math, 31 English, 32 Reading), and a 36 on writing and 33 ELA score. He will be pursuing a Humanities major and he plans to apply to some difficult schools where we live in CA (Berkeley, UCLA).

He will take the SAT next as it is a better fit for him.

Question: Assuming he does better on the SAT, should he sent this ACT score to the universities when he applies?

They will use the higher score for admission purposes, but he doesn’t have to send the ACT if he doesn’t want to. I believe the scores is supposed to be self reported on the UC app.

Your son scored above average overall with only science being relatively low. Math looks good English, reading and especially writing scores are very nice and certainly should be considered desirable for a pending Humanities major… If scores on the SAT and ACT are consistent or even higher on the SAT, I would be included to send all to demonstrate consistent good performance. I would want the ACT writing score in the hands of admissions committees. Standardized test performance is only a relatively minor part of the admissions decision, but the bogie man for students. Your bogie man is not that scary. Be of stout heart.
