28 and still learning

Im 28 years old with a wife and no children. I recently went back to school, and have only one semester left before I get my AA degree (no emphasis). Im going transfer to UNLV in the Spring 2011 and I want to choose the right degree to pursue. I will enter my junior year with a 3.0 or 3.1 GPA and Im considering several majors. 1). Informatics 2). Comp Engineering 3). Electrical Engineering or 4). MIS. Can anyone provide me with more insight on any of the career paths available from your experience. I have began studying for A+ Cert and CCNA Certs. Thanks in advance.

This doesn’t answer your question, but my daughter and I took a campus tour of UNLV last fall and learned about a degree plan they have for something called “entertainment engineering”. Seemed fascinating to me. They claimed that those students were in high demand.

If you’re planning on getting a true engineering degree then i wouldn’t waste my time with those certifications.

I highly, highly doubt that is the case anywhere outside of Las Vegas and MAYBE somewhere like Broadway. I remember a thread on here a while ago about that, and when I looked at it, it seemed like a bunch of smoke and mirrors to me.

All of the things they say you can do afterwards would be more suitable to someone in a traditional engineering program (biomechanics, automation and motion controls) or don’t require a degree at all (rigging). Honestly, it sounds like they just take a mechanical engineering curriculum, strip out the entire thermal fluid sciences portions, water down signals and controls, and throw in some art and theater courses.

I suppose if all you ever wanted to do was work in the entertainment industry, that wouldn’t be so bad. Good luck getting a job anywhere else though.

I find it amusing that they don’t have course requirements or degree plans listed anywhere on their website.

ok thanks, but Im not going after an entetainment engineering degree. Any insights regarding the original post would be more helpful.

I would go into EE or CompE since they are stable and lucrative fields.
