2nd tier Chem Eng. Ph D. programs

So I’m a shade under a 3.5 heading into my junior year, and I’m thinking about what I’m going to do if I can’t get into a top 30 grad school. I do have good research, projects, etc., but if I graduate with a 3.4, what are my chances for a Ph D. program at somewhere like LSU or Auburn or Houston or Buffalo or Pitt or somewhere along those lines? What GPA’s are they typically looking for? Thanks.

Coming out of what school? If you’re coming out of a top 10 engineering program, and you have a decent GPA (~3.2+) and a good GRE score (maybe 1250+), you should have no problem at those schools.

If you’re coming out of a second tier school, it’s a different situation.

Yeah I’m at a second tier school, but I’ll have at worst a 3.4, a 3.3 if I completely slack and do nothing, and say GRE of at least 1300 say at least a 750 quant.

For a PhD program, that might be tight. You should be able to get into an MS program without any problems.

Wow really? I mean I’ve heard of people getting into top 20 programs with a 3.4+, and I mean I’m not at a bad school (it’s top 50). I figured these schools would be pretty safe. Guess I’ll make sure I get a 3.5.
