My daughter had an interview recently at Christopher Newport. Loved the school (really loved it), but it will probably be out of reach financially as an OOS student. This is the second interviewer that mentioned that having a resume (in hand) and actually engaging with the interviewer was refreshing. What? lol. Is it that difficult or rare to deliver on these simple things?
PA Chancellor Brogan on facebook live at https://www.facebook.com/statesystem/, talking about PASSHE potential strike, if you are interested.
@Portercat - how was it?..obviously I missed it…
@bester1. He didn’t say much. Very political answers talking about how much they are trying to balance professor demands with tuition increases. They keeping talking about preserving quality, quality, quality as if the PASSHE quality is so great to begin with. You may be surprised (maybe not) of the ire of the facebook comments around his $325 K salary. I’m not saying administration is not an issue, but kind of detracts from the main issue maybe?
On a related note, we have started looking at some smaller LACs down south. Even though my D says she doesn’t want something THAT small (<2000 students), I am somewhat surprised at the NPCs. Some give out of state grants on order of of 2-3K per year. This may be the same with the Buffalo/NY schools you have been talking about…? It is worth exploring. Some 45-50K COA schools seem to come down to the 20-25K range with modest stats, which in my mind is pretty close to PASSHE level. What do you think?
^That’s typical. With a 25 ACT a student could apply to an excellent college such as Hendrix (it’s only ranked at that level because it’s in Arkansas, but it’s truly excellent, and shares a town with a large public university so there are plenty of parties, sports, and people to date, but the college guarantees small classes.) Millsaps is very small, but in a large city with lots to do. Virginia Wesleyan is well-located and would provide good merit aid. Roanoke, Randolph are both worth looking into.
@Portercat …yes, that is exactly what we are experiencing with Canisius. Academic plus swimming money brings it to the $20,000 range. She is going on an official visit to Bloomsburg this weekend and it is actually very nice and appears to be a good bargain. An official John Carroll visit is at the end of the month and it is her # 1 but I am concerned it will be in the $30,000 range.
@MYOS1634 - Any thoughts on what the COA at John Carroll will be?
@bester1 We would look at some of those schools, but my D wants to avoid winter as much as possible… Lake effect snow, lol!
PASSHE enrollment declining…
http://triblive.com/mobile/11262814-96/enrollment-percent-state
No kidding! They’ve become a bad value, a C+/B-/B student is more likely to graduate from a private college and it wouldn’t cost them more necessarily.
West Chester is still OK it seems…
I like this statement in the article “Enrollment over the past year decreased by 922 students to 12,853 — even as a per-credit tuition program designed to help boost revenue and enrollment went into effect.”
Isn’t this the program that essentially charges higher prices for extra credits? Why would this boost enrollment? Maybe revenue under the best circumstances, but not enrollment. If anything this would push enrollment down.
I’d think the fact they charge extra for students who take enough credits to graduate in 4 years would have the opposite effect.
Did she look at Goucher or Ursinus? Both would offer some merit at her stats.
The fact that you have to pay more so that you can take the standard 15-16 credits so that you can graduate in 4years is INSANE. They do not want you to graduate in 4. The fact that they deny that this may perhaps impact enrollment and/or enrollment consideration is even MORE INSANE. I honestly don’t know how they live with that decision. Seems to be the exact opposite direction of the original intent of public college/university higher education.
Thanks! How is the college process going lately, @bester1 ?
@Portercat - Thank you for asking. She spent the past weekend at Bloomsburg on a recruit visit. Had a great experience with the team and coaching staff. It was a giant open house on Saturday with 2,000 in attendance. She enjoyed the school and the town as well. Funny as she thought the 4 hour drive was long this time??
Next weekend it is off to John Carroll for the weekend. She is counting on this one…I just know it. I am very concerned about the cost. I do not think we will be able to afford it. We will see.
So far she has applied/heard from WVU (accepted) and Duquesne (Accepted). She has applied to Ohio University, Bloomsburg, West Chester and IUP. I forgot to ad Canisius (she was accepted).
She plans on applying to University of Findlay, University of Delaware and John Carroll. I can not get her to look at a SUNY school or many small LAC’s(where I think she would thrive).
How about you Portercat? Any progress or news?
Great, you are ahead of the game with 3 acceptances for sure! We are still getting the applications together; only applying to West Chester and Millersville in PASSHE system for now. I suppose we could add others later in case of disaster (maybe Kutztown, East Stroudsburg) as most of them accept students up until the end of next summer!
We are focusing somewhat down south and also applying to Christopher Newport, McDaniel, Randolf Macon (legacy), Elizabethtown (PA) and York (PA). We had intended on visiting West Chester on their open house day this weekend but found it it was HS homecoming and she didn’t want to miss it. We will attend the WC open house on Oct 29th, and can always easily go back since we are 50 minutes away.
Great stuff. My D originally l really liked York and for some reason took it off her list. Someone must have said something at the cafeteria lunch table…I liked it a lot.
My D heard a story about Bloomsburg. It was totally anecdotal, but of course this influenced her (to my dismay). An acquaintance of hers ended up transferring for a few reasons - many kids seemed to leave on weekends, she had a hard time making friends, and there was a Christian group that she was interested in, which was not inclusive of certain folks. This acquaintance is now at Temple and is very happy supposedly. You hear one story, and young kids are impressionable
Does Duquesne offer good merit packages?
