Interesting article on College Carnivals/Parties thrown by the schools. 30 years ago we had a spring carnival at SRU…but the cost has changed significantly.
At least the lack of funding is being discussed(at some level)…
The PA Governor is wanting a discussion. Ranking 49 out of 50 in affordability seems to have hit a nerve…finally.
On a personal note, I had sent my daughter an email(hoping she would check her school email during the day) yesterday with the COA for the PASSHE schools. After she came home she actually sat down and asked some logical questions about affordability, opportunity and athletics. Honestly, I am not particularly excited about the PASSHE schools(I am a Slippery Rock grad) these days…but at our income level(we are just over the amount to get aid) and her stats(24 ACT)…these might just be the only 4 year schools that fall on our affordability spectrum.
Looks like the PASSHE Profs may go out on strike…second most expensive system in the country and the students will be penalized in another way…no class…such a disappointment
PASSHE Union Staff have voted to strike…

PASSHE…what’s to blame for tuition hikes?? Interesting take on the issue…

We visited IUP today. Beautiful day and very nice campus. Enjoyable presentation with a visit to a classroom, HUB, Rec center and Resident Halls - rooms were amazing. Daughter did not want to tell people she was visiting there. The swim coaches were very kind and gracious and she would be a great fit on the team. I thought it was great…she said it was “ok”…lol
I forgot to mention her composite ACT score is a 25 and pulled a 26 in Math. 1st time she took it was a score of 20.
Excellent. That opens a lot more places.
@MYOS1634 - thanks for the kind words. Hopefully it will help her with John Carroll University as far as merit goes. I think it would help with merit at some PASSHE schools and will help her get into West Chester.
Absolutely. All of it.
What happens if PASSHE go out on strike…

Just in case you all were at all interested…even though my daughter could go to IUP, be strong student and swim…she told us that there is no way she could go to IUP. Honestly…this is getting annoying. We only have so much money and will be eligible for very little if any aid other than loans.
Make sure she applies. If her final choice is either community college/Branch campus with no swimming, or IUP with swimming, she may change her mind. Plus, teenagers can grow a lot in 6 months.
@bester1. Hang in there, it is still relatively early even though it might not feel that way (or on CC boards). We are still looking for ways to find merit, even though our daughter’s scores make it less promising. I am hoping the interview (she seems to be a good interviewer but bad test taker!) or essay may have some impact in some schools.
@bester1 Your daughter sounds so much like mine (though mine is not an athlete). Since someone she used to work with (whom she didn’t like and who only lasted a few weeks on the job) told her not to go to IUP, she refuses to consider it. I’ve done many hours of research but she refuses to listen to me regarding schools where she might be accepted and receive substantial financial aid. But she’ll listen to a random teenager! If my daughter isn’t accepted at West Chester or Temple, or if she is accepted only at Temple and we can’t afford it, she will have to widen her horizons, take one or more gap years (and hopefully mature a lot), or choose community college.
@MYOS1634 - Thanks for the advice. I desire her to apply to 3 PASSHE schools. They all would like her to be apart of their team and institution. She had an official visit to Canisius College in Buffalo. Coach considers her a the top recruit…now doesn’t think it is for her. Kind of set on John Carroll but I do not think we will be able to afford it?
@Portercat - You are correct - it is early. I am telling my kid that it is too early to be closing doors/opportunities!!! lol. Good luck with the interviews. Please let me know how your process begins to unfold.
@kidzncatz - Perhaps are children were separated at birth?? Ha! Our situations are so very similar. At the school lunch table, my daughters friend said “I do not know why anyone would go or want to go to IUP”…that was all she wrote. She will be going on an official visit to Bloomsburg. She doesn’t want to tell anyone. lol…too crazy. She has eliminated IUP, Clarion, Edinboro, York, CALU of PA, Shippensburg, Niagara, Allegheny, Wittenberg, Mt. Union, Westminster, W&J, Fairmont, St. Vincent, Millersville, Gannon, West Virginia Wesleyan, Youngstown, Wooster, Baldwin Wallace, Cleveland State, St. Bonaventure…I think I may have missed some?
Kind of reminds me of the boy in high school that has a dozen girls that think he is cute, nice, smart and funny…he can only see the Home Coming Queen yet he can’t have her as she is dating the football team captain…my dauhter wants what she can not have…lol
