3.4 GPA: Instant Rejection?

I’m applying to Boston University, Northeastern, University of Maryland, UDel, UMass Amherst, Virginia Tech, Cornell as a reach, Rutgers, William and Mary, Colgate, and RPI

My intended major is Computer Science

Is a 3.4 Unweighted GPA a killer for any applicant?
My SAT Score is 1910 (720 M, 580 CR, 610 W)
Very strong essay
Very strong recommendations
Very strong extracurriculars
I am Pacific Islander and white.
Live in NJ
Everything is strong except for my GPA

Has anyone had some success with stats close to mine? Anyone have any insight?
What are my chances?

Pacific Islander?

Pssh. Lucky. That’s a pretty freaking huge help.

3.4 GPA is not an instant rejection. Your SAT could be higher. but combined with the fact that you’re a pacific Islander, you can get into a lot of those places, especially with really strong essays and recs.

Thank you, jonluca. Very informative. Being Pacific Islander gives me that much of a boost?

Well it depends on how you categorize yourself. When you fill out the race/ethnicity forms do you just consider yourself “white”? Or do you actually put down “pacific islander”? There is a difference and one would be slightly advantageous to you.

With that being said V Tech, Cornell, William and Mary, and RPI are reaches. The others are in the slight reach to match category.

I put down Pacific Islander. Should I put Down that I am both?

No just leave it at Pacific Islander because that’s what you are. Both will just sound confusing.

Thank you , very informative!

Is Virginia tech that difficult to get into?

Overall, you are competitive enough for several of the schools on your list. Definitely not an auto-reject.

However, your SAT could certainly improve to make you more competitive. How many times have you taken it? Have you attempted the ACT?

Taken it once. And yes I received a 29

Bump bump bump

I’d definitely make a second attempt at both tests if I were in your shoes. Also, given your strength in Math I’d take a swing at the Math II SAT Subject Test. Since you are interest in Comp Sci that could add some strength to your application.

What about my current stats I would really like to get into BU, University of Maryland, and VT

short bump
