My extracurriculars aren’t lacking, but I doubt they would be standout. What are some top 40ish universities/LACs I could get into? I know going strictly off name/rank isn’t the best, but it matters to my family.

My GPA shows significant upward trend, especially junior year, but is weak cumulatively.

if you mean by the US news and world report rankings, then i’d say you have a fair shot at most of the schools in the top 40. top 15 or so might be a little shaky, but they’re kind of crapshoots for anyone. you could probably get into most of the schools ranked 15-40 in that ranking.

but seriously…ranking doesn’t matter. and those rankings are bull most of the time anyway. you gotta make sure your family understands that.

yeah, I think my parents are very liberal for asian parents, but when it all comes down, they still factor in name, although they acknowledge that it isn’t everything.

bump any more ideas?

Need to know more about what you would prefer. Also, does the 1410 mean 800M/610CR, or 710/700? Is the 3.6 weighted or unweighted? What kind of course rigor does it represent? How about AP scores and SATIIs? Class percentile?

1410 is 720M/690CR. 3.6 is UW.
Course load increased in difficulty each year, by junior year it was most difficult. 8 APs by the end of senior year. Class rank not reported.

What was your writing score?

Hey NJSterling,
I think you have a good shot at a bunch of top schools just by numbers… If you are looking for the best schools in the mid-atlantic area I would look into…

Swarthmore
Haverford
UPENN
Brown
Cornell
Colgate
Bucknell
Lehigh
Lafayette
And you may as well check out the Rutgers honors program. I go to Rutgers, enjoy it… but envy a liberal arts college, just throwing that out there.

Simpson98, my writing score was 700.

Agree that Patriot League colleges are a good choice:
Colgate
Bucknell
Holy Cross
Lehigh
Lafayette

Many schools on Rutgers89’s list would be big reaches for you (Swarthmore, Brown, U Penn). Haverford may be more realistic and Cornell be a more realistic reach if that 3.6 puts you in the top 10% of your class. (Even if they don’t rank, the school profile probably gives enough info to roughly place you.) The schools 1980collegegrad lists seem realistic. But there are many more places you would have a shot at. It’s hard to say without knowing more about what appeals to you.

Thanks for all the input. As for what I’m looking for, i’m undecided on what I want to major in. Thinking about it, I would want to avoid small LACs. A couple schools I’m interested in are BC, Lehigh, GWU, and my dream school, NYU.

Would those be possible? My greatest concern is my GPA. Although it shows ideal grade progression, is still weak IMO.

Consolation - Cornell is out of my league. I’m probably hovering around 20%, but my school doesn’t report rank regardless. My freshmen and sophomore years were not very rigorous, only a handful of honors courses.

I was about to say…these guys are giving you pretty high reaches lol.

I think you have a possibility at NYU…just write great essays and stuff.

I had pretty much the same stats a couple of years ago (3.6 UW HS GPA, 1410 SAT) and got into everywhere I applied (only 3 schools though). I’m currently a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, although I applied in-state. NYU was a reach for me, although I didn’t even apply to it because I’m not a huge fan of living in NYC. The most important thing though is choosing a school that is right for you, not your parents.

Thanks for the input guys. And although my parents do consider the name, I’m guilty of it also. I guess there is allure there.

NJsterling, how is your GPA if you exclude Freshman year?

Alexandre, it would be a 3.75.

Many universities do not require or consider Freshman grades. I Michigan doesn’t. I am pretty sure many more do not. You may want to keep that in mind when making your list.

bump any more suggestions?
