3.8 gpa, Test optional, UIUC college of Liberal Arts chances [WA resident, brain and cognitive science or sociology]

Hii! Can anyone let me know how my chances are for UIUC college of Liberal Arts and Science OOS?

1st choice major - Brain and Cognitive Science, 2nd choice - Sociology

3.8uw GPA, 11 Ap classes, 6 dual enrollment, strong AP scores. 9 total science classes

Ec’s: 500+ hrs hospital volunteering, published psychology/cognition research paper in high school science journal, vet internship, HOSA state awards, Dance

Are you in state or out of state? What type of high school did you attend and what is your class ranking? How many years of foreign language and what’s your highest level of math?

I think 60/40. Gpa is in range and rigor is great. Why no test with 11 APs, asking for a friend….UIUC.

They say no test won’t be held against you. If you believe them, I’d feel good.

Good luck.

To add to these questions, did you apply EA or will you be applying RD?

Hi I am out of state (Washington). I am at a large, public high school with a graduating class of 500 and no class rank. I have 4 yrs of Spanish (2 yrs are college level). My highest level of math is AP Calc AB (Snr yr)

Might you possibly be either premed or pre-vet? If so, can your parents cover the cost of 4 years of undergraduate education out of state with no debt and also cover the cost of medical or veterinary school without your taking on even as much as 1/2 of the cost of medical or veterinary school as debt?

500 hours of volunteering in a hospital is quite good for someone who is currently a senior in high school if you are thinking of premed as a possible option.

I applied early action!

Thank you! I had a 1420 SAT (700RW, 720M) but chose to go test optional because I didn’t like my score and feel my GPA reflects me better

Hi I am premed! Yes, my parents can cover the cost of both undergrad and med school so I will not be in debt.

So to explain my thinking: your grades are there (middle 50 for LAS last year was 3.73-4.00), your SAT would have been at the 25th percentile but that’s not relevant now. LAS admit rate was ~36% last year, and overall in state are more favorable that OOS (as a rough % extrapolated from overall, I’d guesstimate the OOS admit for LAS at 25%, but that is very rough and assumes the IS/OOS ratio is the same across all schools, which it probably isn’t). You will probably get (according to UIUC) a bump of some sort from EA, your rigor is high, and I think your ECs are outstanding as someone already mentioned. All that said I’d probably say it’s a toss-up, which may not be particularly helpful. Of course, what we don’t know is how your UIUC-specific essays will be received. Good luck and please keep us updated on the outcome.

62% submitted. You are in range. I would have. The 25th of those who did was 1420.

It’s gotten tougher and the SAT would help.

Just curious - coming from WA, why there ?

Have you visited ?

Good luck.

Thank you! I heard that if my SAT is below the middle 50% it can be a disadvantage and doesn’t add any value to my app

It’s hard to know whether or not it’s a disadvantage (at some schools they say below 50th percentile don’t submit, and others say anywhere in the middle 50 is fine), but regardless, it’s done now so no point going on about “should have” - either way I can’t see that it would have swung the decision. You said your Ap scores were good so I assume you submitted those?

Different schools of thought. You may be right. On the other hand, if 38% didn’t submit, your score might be better in context.

Still, 25% of admits had scores at your level or below. And then 38 of 100 didn’t even submit so you can assume they were lower.

Hop you get in.

Yes I submitted a 5 on APW, 4’s on Lang, Research, Seminar, Psych, Bio.

That’s true and thank you!

Is APW Workd Hostory ? Have you visited ? Why UIUC? Just curious.

And some % of those were likely recruited athletes. Anyway she can’t submit scores now so it’s not really adding value to say what she should have done.

Indeed but as a big school, unlikely all. I’d be more worried at a smaller school but yes, I’d assume athletes have a lower submit rate than non.

Unless there something compelling to OP about UIUC, there’s lots of great subs in the Midwest and elsewhere so they’ll be fine no matter which way it goes.
