I think I might take a B this semester and finish my year with a 3.85 gpa. I know a 3.85 uw gpa is not a bad gpa but compared to the average 3.9 gpa of admitted freshman this year, I think my gpa will hurt me. Do you agree or am I being paranoid? I know Cal especially places more emphasize on gpa than anything else except SAT so I’m kind of depressed…Regarding the rigor, I’ve taken 6 aps and some honor classes (soph+junior year).

What year are you?

I dont think it matters too much because its one B and if that was a particularly hard class, you can easily make that point by gettkng a 5 on the ap!!

@Calicoious I’m a junior

What is your UC GPA? They have a specific formula and only count certain AP and honors classes.

It might hurt you considering it’s your last semester they will review on your application. However, if this is your only B, I doubt it’ll hurt you that badly.

No, I don’t think so. In my opinion Adcom has set up a lot of different hurdles for applicants to get over. Uw GPA is just one of them and a 3.85 should get you over that hurdle. But all the other hurdles are another question.

Any chance your B was in statistics?

A 3.85 will not be enough to eliminate you from contention, any more than a 4.0 would have been enough to guarantee you admission.

No, it’s actually in AP Calc BC. How would that look? Would I be at a severe disadvantage compared to those with a 3.9+ gpa?

S got into MechE with a 3.89 or something like that but his UC GPA was around 4.6. He did have some really nice EC though. He won UCB Pioneers in Engineering and was the team founder and captain the one year they participated. He only applied to UCB and got in there. He did have a pre guaranteed admission to UCR and UCI based on GPA test scores and residency. He just didn’t bother acknowledging them.
