<p>I will be attending Temple University in Fall of 2010, and my father and I were just talking about a monthly allowance of $300. Will this be enough considering that Temple is Philly, which is an expensive city?</p>

<p>I would think it would be enough, I plan on going to Drexel (also in Philly) and my parents are going to be giving me a weekly allowance of $75 (comes out to $300 per month) and I think it should be fine. You will most likely be on a meal plan which means you will only need money to eat out at a restaurant occasionally. Other than that the only expenses you should have would cell phone and extras such as movies, snacks, video games, and shopping. If you don’t go blowing your money you should be fine. You can also try to get a job on campus if you need it.</p>

<p>What does the $300 cover? That’s a lot of money per month.</p>
<p>No one needs $300 per month just for personal expenses.</p>
<p>I’m not sure about the OP, but in my case my parents have agreed to pay for the food costs of college while I am paying for the rest of it through loans. I told my parents I would prefer to to pay for the food myself, so they divided the total cost of the meal plan for a year by 52 weeks and it comes out to around $75 per week so they are going to give me $75 per week.</p>
<p>Basically its there to cover books, other expenses, and hopefully save up some money. In my second year of college I plan on living in an apartment, so the $75 per week will be my grocery money.</p>
<p>The money would be used for incidentals, going out,eating out, or I could just save the money to buy something aka a car. Transportation is also included.</p>

<p>If your parents are paying for everything else, you shouldn’t even be thinking about asking for any money from them. So my answer would be $0.</p>

<p>$300 is way more than enough for Temple/philly.</p>
<p>If you must take the money, put it in an account and invest it until you graduate.</p>

How much would you think will be sufficient?</p>
<p>The most expensive parties I’ve ever been to were $10. Most are around $5. Say you go out thursday, friday, saturday to $10 parties (once you make acquaintances you’ll find plenty of places to go for free, btw).</p>
<p>I’m assuming you’ll have a meal plan then – I have 10 meal /wk plan and spend about $20-30 dollars /wk on food outside of it (I had night classes that got out after dinner was over so that was abt 3 meals a week plus snacks here and there from 7-11 or a truck).</p>
<p>I work at the zoo once a week and usually go down to university city or center city once every week or two. Septa is fairly expensive, but the price isn’t so bad if you buy your tokens in bulk and have some lying around at all times. If you don’t buy tokens then it’s $2 a ride and 75 cents a transfer – you can get to just about anywhere on $5.50 round trip. Say you go downtown twice a week, that’s $11.</p>
<p>That covers everything I can think of, but let’s add a $10-20 buffer to be conservative.</p>
<p>$30 + 30 + 11 + 10 (or 20) = $81 - 91.</p>
<p>Again, most of these prices I picked using the most expensive scenarios. You could quite comfortably get by on less than $50, but I can’t see anyone needing more than $100. Can you think of anything else you’d be interested in doing that I haven’t mentioned?</p>

<p>The city is expensive when youre older – when you’re in college you hang out with broke college kids and find things to do on the cheap. Make friends at other schools in philly and you’ll never have an excuse to be bored (not that Temple alone is boring, but if youre so close to so many schools you should take advantage of it).</p>

<p>This makes me laugh but also makes me feel like poop. I blew around $150 a week on booze and food during my time at Purdue which is in the middle of cornfields.</p>
