Hi all,
I received my June SAT scores today, which turned out pretty well (1550: 760 EBRW, 790 M, 6/6/6 Essay). I originally decided to take the SAT just for the National Merit competition, but now I’m wondering how well my SAT score stacks up against my ACT score (34 C, 36 E, 36 M, 34 R, 31 S, 10/10/10/10 Essay) for admission and scholarships. For reference, I’m looking at competitive schools (top 25 universities and liberal arts colleges).
The concordance table from College Board lists a 1550 as corresponding to a 34, but after looking at the precision percentile rankings from PrepScholar, it appears my SAT score is better (99.70 vs. 99.06). However, I’m worried that I may be at a disadvantage submitting my SAT scores at schools that superscore SAT because I have only taken it once.
I’m up to taking the SAT again to raise my EBRW score (and hopefully my math score), but I’m not sure how my score will help me stand out against the many 1600 superscorers also applying. I’ve also got a limited time to retest (since I am taking Subject Tests in August).
I’m certain that I should submit my ACT superscore (35 C, 36 E, 36 M, 36 R, 31 S, 10/10/10/10) to any school that superscores ACT over my SAT, so this question is more about which test I should submit to 1) colleges that only superscore SAT and 2) colleges that do not superscore.
Thanks!
CJ
I would say you are done with testing. Those are both excellent scores. My son did not take the ACT and he only took the SAT once with a score of 2320. He was accepted to Yale, Berkeley, GaTech etc and will start at Yale next month.

Stop please. You do NOT need to take any more tests. At this point, getting a few more points on the SAT will absolutely not make or break your application. No college is going to split hairs over 99.7 or 99.06. Not Cal Tech, Harvey Mudd, or Harvard. Your essay scores are fine. You have no disadvantage to speak of. I have never met a student who got higher than 18 on the SAT essay, and I am a test prep tutor for both tests. In your shoes, I would submit both tests, because your scores are equally strong and show that you are clearly intelligent and able to write competently.
Take your subject tests in August and be done with testing. Senior year is busy enough as it is. You need to take College Apps 101, and write a bunch of supplementary essays if you are applying to very selective schools. Cut yourself some slack, and do yourself a favor. No more SAT1.
You have a 99%+ ACT and SAT result.
Also with a 1550, it’s within the realm of possibility that your score might go down on a second attempt. Why risk it if you are applying to schools that require submission of all scores?
Those are great scores, congrats! Submit both and be done!
