Does anyone know if the 3500 characters counts spaces and carriage returns? Thanks.

I have not seen the online honors college application website, but most online college applications will send you an error message if you try to submit an application with an essay that is too long. If your essay is borderline, you may want to reword things so that it has carries the same information and has the same impact, but it is just shorter. The evaluators have to review lots of applications, and they do not want to have to read “War and Peace” for every applicant.

Thanks - Son cut some, hit save and it saved, so however long it was it turned out to be the right length… :)

I am not sure whether the online text area counts the spaces between words as part of the overall character count. This all depends on how the form has been programmed. Anyway, there are probably A LOT of users who already do this, but I would remind students to write and edit your essay in a word processing program like Microsoft Word first, and utilize the word count feature (under “tools”) to keep track of where you are with both character and word count. It will tell you what the character count is both with and without spaces. Then, just copy and paste it into the text/essay area. :)
