For the main Common App essay, I have approximately 375 words. I don’t know if there’s really anything else to say about the topic without sounding trite, so…do you think this is an appropriate length? The minimum word count is 250 words, but it seems as if many here are worrying about theirs being nearly a thousand words long…is 375 words too concise?

Allegedly the magic length is 500-700. BUT stretching your essay to 500 just to add length for its own sake would be a very bad idea. If you like the essay, and it says about you what you want, then the current length is fine.

the shorter the better. think of yourself as an admission officer who reads some hundreds of them everyday and then think again. Would you want to read something that’s 700 words long? I’d say the magic length is between 350-500.

Your essay is done when it’s said everything it can say and it’s done so in over 250 words and under [magical number that differs slightly by user].
