3d printers for home?

Anyone have a 3d printer for home use? If so, please let me know make/model and if you recommend.

Aren’t they thousands and thousands of dollars?

Let me know if there is a cheap decent one!

How big a thing do you want to print? And, what’s your definition of “cheap”? Makerbot is probably the most “brand name” of the bunch, but that doesn’t mean its the best, I guess. Make magazine has reviews of a variety of printers.

There are some smaller ones for around $1000. We built our own in a class at the local makerspace. It worked pretty well for awhile, but it needs a new heating element I think.

They are fun. I made Christmas ornaments and presents with ours last year. My son’s FTC team is printing wheels and other parts on someone else’s printer.

I want to print my own Star Wars action figures.

^^Copyright/trademark issues?

Don’t tell…

lol

Is this the action figure you wanted? http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:51989

Awesome! Meesa like Jar Jar Binks!

Makerbot has the biggest share of smaller 3D printers. They run over a thousand dollars, though (more like $2K, I think).

Thanks! Definitely too expensive. Maybe next year.

Meesa think wait too! Too many Gundars…

Depending upon your personal technical skill, a 3d printer is possible for under $500. I personally am considering one from Folger Tech, knowing full well that it will require some work to get it going. But I will admit, my interest is in the printer itself, not the do-dads that it can make.

For MakerBot, they went a little upscale a couple years ago, moving into the upper end of the hobbyist “pro-sumer” market.

Good info! Thanks guys!

Check to see if you town has any options to use a 3d printer at a maker space or library. Here’s an example from general google search, which happened upon a CT location - http://westportlibrary.org/services/maker-space/3d-printers
