If I have an unweighted 3.95 at a prestigious high school, would I still have a chance at Harvard?

According to a data set that I have seen, Harvard’s average GPA is roughly 3.9 (assuming I have remembered correctly). So, yes, your score would be high enough to be competitive. I’m not familiar with the American schooling system, so I can’t comment on prestige. To answer your other question about sport, I believe that the correct answer is: while a sport may help you to seem more ‘all-rounded’ or ‘involved with school life’, it certainly wouldn’t give you an advantage over every other exceptional applicant who can also list ‘played a sport’ on their apps. Unless you’ve achieved in the area, don’t expect it to help.

Also, here is a full discussion on the sport topic with contributions from people with far more experience than me:

Will being a varsity athlete help? Will a 3.95 give me a chance? You have many questions.
Take a look at this: <a href=“The Harvard Crimson | Class of 2017”>http://features.thecrimson.com/2013/frosh-survey/admissions.html

No. You don’t have a chance. Harvard doesn’t accept people who have less than 4.0 GPAs and 2390 on the SAT.

When you say harvard’s average gpa is a 3.9, what do you mean? Is that a certain percentage or…? Because many schools calculate gpa differently and my gpa is a bit away from a 3.9 :(

You can’t tell from a number like that. Harvard will look at your grades in each class in each year and compare what they find to other elements in your application to see if you stand out in terms of passion and drive. They know they can’t compare GPAs across the board for all schools. 3.95 obviously isn’t below some kind of arbitrary cut-off. It’s higher than mine was.
