We just came across a college that follows a 4-1-4 calendar. This is new to us and, at first glance, seems like a tedious schedule. I read that the January term helps give deep dive or study abroad opportunity but it seems like this could cause a higher level of burn out with a short winter break - especially for students who live relatively far from their college or their freshman year. What is the benefit of this type of schedule and any pros or cons as compared to a traditional 2 semester schedule?
My suggestion - have your student speak to a student ambassador and ask.
You’ll get feedback here and I"m sure it will include fantastic and interesting abroad trips. My daughter had one in a Maymester so obviously different timing.
But nothing beats talking to a current student who has been through it - and the school will have kids to set you up with for a discussion. So that’s how I’d attack this since you have a school in mind.
Good luck.
