4 consecutive years science requirement or 4 credits?

Trying to figure out DS25 senior schedule. He will have completed 4 credits for science at the end of this year - biology, chemistry, physics and APES. HS counsellor says he needs a senior year science class for A&M, which he is not excited about. He is thinking about applying to the business school. I called AO and the girl thought 4 credits would be fine, but I am not sure who to believe! Can any of you experienced folks help?

Thanks so much

Who is “the girl”? Are you referring to a woman working at the admissions office at this college?

Yes. It sounded like a young girl (maybe a student that works in the office), which is why I am not sure if she would actually know. Based on other A&M threads, responses to questions can be different depending on who picks up the phone.

Then maybe send an email to your regional admissions officer. Your high school guidance counselor should know where to send your specific questions.

That’s a good idea. I’ll have my son reach out.

I already had four science classes at the end of my junior year. Last year when I was picking my senior classes, I was told that I needed to have a science class my senior year for the Distinguished Level graduation plan. Does your high school have another physics class or is a computer science class considered a science?

I think there are some electives he can choose like CS or engineering - he just isn’t excited about them. He prefers writing!

Texas A&M University’s recommended coursework includes:

  • 4 years of English
  • 4 years of Mathematics - Three of the courses should be Algebra I, II and Geometry
  • 4 years of Science - Two courses should come from Biology I, Chemistry I or Physics I
  • 2 years of the same foreign language

Most schools don’t require four. Surprising to see they recommend. If you doubled up one year I’d think you are fine.

But yes ask an admissions officer. You can email. Let them know which year of school you took each.

We doubled up one year. My son was accepted to Mays in September by holistic review.

Congratulations! …so, to be clear, he did not take a science his senior year as he doubled up a previous year?

Correct! He’s a senior with no science right now.

Might not be a good idea if you want engineering though!

Thankyou for your response!
No engineering for my son, so it might open up another potential elective. Congrats again to your son!

@ljs1 did you attend Aggieland Saturday? Or have you taken an official campus, attended College Fair? Great places to get answers for questions like this, especially major specific. Not to mention, if not auto admit, A&M likes to see demonstrated interested- Aggieland Saturday, official tour, overnight with the Corps, etc.

If you call Admissions, more than likely you’ll get a different answer everytime. I’d have your student ask regional A&M rep, and also take a Mays tour, if you haven’t already.

Will he be auto admit?

Thanks for your response - I know you are extremely knowledgeable on A&M!
Not auto admit. We are signed up for a campus tour, and Mays session on March 11th, but wanted to get answers before then. He will be taking the SAT in March and will submit score (or scores if he takes the June SAT) to the school. His goal is 1400.
I will definitely have him reach out to the regional rep.

For Mays, if not auto admit, he’ll need at least a 1400+ on SAT, close to Top Ten% and a solid resume (leadership, class rigor, AP’s, community service, etc). And apply in August.

Hopefully he’s been practicing/studying/prepping for ACT and SAT already?

If he has the opportunity to take AP Stats senior year, highly suggest that. If he gets into Mays, those that have taken AP Stats breeze thru Stats at A&M. (AP, not DC).

Good information to know!
He has been prepping for the SAT for the past few weekends and will continue to prep. He is taking AP Stats this year along with APES and AP Eng lang. Planning to take 4 AP’s next year (calc A/B, Eng lit, micro/macro , psychology),and trying to figure out other 2 classes.

My Mays Aggie took AP Psych; enjoyed the class, made a 5 on exam…but A&M didn’t accept that credit towards anything. Just an FYI.

At many schools, APs aren’t an assuredly. My daughter was only able to use 9 of 30 in part due to several counting for the same classes.

Some get lucky.

Yep.
OP asked specifically about Mays Business, which my student was. That’s why I mentioned AP Psych won’t count, in case they wanted to drop the class or take something else.
