I will be graduating with only 3 years of science: physics, chemistry, and biology (all honors). I have four years of every other subject but will this lack of science hurt me? I dropped AP chem this year because I had mono in the fall. If I adequately explained that in my application will it still hurt me?

No. They recommend 3 years of science.

Nope. I had 3 or 4 crammed into my first 2 years of high school and I’m here. Still managing to do decent in Duke sciences too. Don’t even bother explaining because you’re fine.

I was just looking through the USnews profile of Duke. What the heck is the difference b/w a science and a lab, and a social study and history class…LoveDuke what classes did you take in High School?

Science itself is a lecture.

Lab is the class where process is learned. Perform practical science knowledge.

History is study of historical events. A lecture.

Social Study is a lecture class: say Sociology for example.

Yeah, true…butttt

On USnews Duke requires 4 social studies but it says “N/A” for history. Is it possible they consider Social Study and History classes in the same category.

Yes, for high schoolers social studies includes history. For me “social studies” amounted to three years of history (World & AP US) and one year of AP Gov.

thanks a lot!

I only took three years of science in HS and they took me, so dont worry about it.

My sciences were just normal high school sciences…Chem, Physical Science (freshman req.), Biology, and Earth Science (all honors). No APs or anything, which is weird because I’m a science major.

History I had everything ranging from World History to Honors Economics to AP Gov and APUS, but as said before, there are many things that fall under history and social studies/sciences so you should be fine.

yeah I’m done with honors bio and am in Honors Chem…Next ill have Honors Physics and then a choice between AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Physics. My school is recognized for how many quality AP classes it offers which I am really excited about…

About the history thing… my mom wouldn’t let me take AP art history this year because at my school, it counts as a fine art. She thought if i didn’t have four social studies credits, i wouldn’t get into college. I took AP Psychology instead, which does count as an social studies course. Does it really matter? Seems like Art HISTORY is more of a history than psych…

definately, except for the foundations of Psychology, I would not expect it to be labeled as a history. AP U.S. is considered a History class at my school.
