420v = auto reject at UW-Seattle?

…if everything else is average + OOS?

I want to major in math. I have really high grades in my HS math courses and math courses taken at Hunter College and Baruch College. I have received A+'s in all my math courses taken. Will they overlook the measly SAT verbal score?

420 verbal score?
I think you should at least improve it to like 550.

To be honest with you, I don’t think you have a chance. UW is very competitive for OOS, and that score kills you. In order to get in OOS you definitely have to meet their 75 percintiles for strong consideration. You’re probably not even an averae in-state applicant. Good luck though…

Oh wells then. UW is my first choice for a long time. Now I don’t think I’ll even apply.

Dude, just retake the SAT. Don’t give up on your dreams because of one minor setback!

Seriously. And if it’s your dream, at least apply.

you have 1140 including math dont you? it’s not THAT bad…below average for uw seattle but not horrible

Yes I do. Verbal is really hard.

Take the SATs again. Buy a prep book, study your butt off. EVERYONE is capable of at least a 500.

If I can get a 500, I’ll be alright?

Is English your first language? If not, you could take the TOEFL and that would help explain your low verbal scores.

Yes it’s my first language. :(

Most of my friends get 650 & up in verbal. They’re freshmen in high school. I think you are capable of even 600…

The average score for each section (m/v/w) is approximately 500. That means roughly around 50% of test-takers scored above 500 and roughly around 50% scored below 500. Now, there are probably over 1.5 million test-takers on each test day. So roughly around half of those people will score under 500, one of which is me.

420 on verbal? Reake SAT…I mean I understand verbal is hard because a lot of those vocab words are not words u know and they are liek use words in context. its like if u dont know the effing word in the first place it doesnt help…thats why i think verbal is hard for a lot of ppl

But there are lots of people taking the SAT who don’t intend to go on to four-year colleges. A 420 is–I’m sorry, I’m not saying this to be mean–so low that it suggests a learning disability or some other problem, especially since you are obviously a very good student and you write clearly and you’re going to top schools. Have you spoken to your guidance counselor about what went wrong on the test? Have you gotten a score report showing where your weaknesses are?

Nothing went wrong on the test. I just had trouble with the reading passages. It’s too difficult for me to comprehend.

someone at caltech (class of 2009) has a 460 Verbal

the lowest math score was 640 (pretty impressive)

LMAO. Hopefully UIUC will be nice.

a 420 verbal score correlates to approximately a 97 ‘verbal’ iq… the 42nd-43rd percentile nationally. while it certainly isnt something to get excited about, suggesting a learning disability based on such a score is absurd.
