4900 Characters or a Page?

For the long essay, if I attach a WordPerfect file (which I’m assuming is okay?), is it okay if the essay is longer than a page, as long as it’s under 4900 characters (and therefore would fit in the box if that’s what I did)?

The only reason I ask is 11a says “you only have a page,” but I figured that was just a clever little remark in response to the idea of a picture being worth a 1000 words. (Oddly enough, 4900 characters is approximately 1000 words…)

well you can always reduce the size of the font to fit one page

pearlygate: “well you can always reduce the size of the font to fit one page”

But do I actually need to do that? Or is more than one page perfectly fine, as long as it’s within the character limit?

Keep in mind that I doubt the reader is going to be an idiot, so if it needs to be under a page (which I doubt, but I’m just making sure here), I seriously doubt reducing the font would work (especially since it’s the actual file!).

The site says “please limit your document to one page” when it talks about uploading a document. I don’t think that is any sort of innuendo or reference to one of the essay topics, I think it is a clear limit on how many pages an attached document can be. I would reduce the font size so your approximately 4900-character essay can fit on to one page.

But if that’s the case, wouldn’t it make more sense to say that when they mention uploading documents, not when describing the prompt for 11a? Heck, you could argue it applies to 11a and not 11b.

But yeah, I guess I’ll just have to err on the side of caution, though.

It IS where they talk about uploading documents. Look at the website. Trust me, its there.

It says: “If you prefer to submit a document using tabbed indents, bold or italicized text, or any other formatting styles, we strongly recommend using the “upload” feature. Please limit your document to one page.”

I’m just going to take my essay (which is a little longer than 4,900 characters) and reduce the font size until it fits on one page.

why don’t you just copy and paste your essay into the box? it’ll be a lot easier though it might be a bit harder to read.

@chilltown: Woah, I didn’t notice that. Thanks for pointing it out.

So a new question: Would it really be wise to reduce the font? Wouldn’t they get annoyed?

@fuzzylogic: The main reason is that I want to use italics.

After reducing the margins a little bit (to about 1 inch) and reducing the font size to 11 (still very easy to read), my 4900+ character essay easily fit on one page.

I sent in a 2-page, double-spaced, 12-font-size essay. I hope they’re all right with that. I doubt that they’re going to penalize you for making it two pages, and thus easier to read, if your essay is good enough.

Don’t try that. It just shows that you can’t follow simple instructions and gives them one more reason to not admit you.

Don’t reduce the font less than size 11 because size 10 becomes a little small…

You can also make it fit by making the margins 0.7 (which still looks fine) on all sides.
