I understand that the FASFA figures the parents can pay 5.6% of their savings above a certain threshold. Does the 5.6% go out the window with the CSS Profile? I guess each school can do as they want, but is there some ballpark figure? Do colleges that require the Profile try to keep to the 5.6%, or some higher percentage?

Private colleges and public colleges that utilize Profile have their own formulas for evaluation. Only about 10% of all colleges use Profile and the majority are private.

Schools that use the Profile can use any formula they wish to use. To be honest, there really is no way to tell you what they do with assets. The Profile DOES take a much more detailed look at your parents’ assets than the FAFSA does.

Based on a number of net price calculators I have used for schools who require the Profile, it seems that most of them do use 5.6% or similar percentage.

Those are a new thing & the info that is coming back from families is that they are wildly optimistic, it seems to depend on how much info it requires.
