I am currently applying to colleges and my parents have 50/50 custody meaning I am legally allowed to use both their adresses. For example, I have a PA drivers license yet I use my Delaware address for buying things since there’s no sales tax. I go to school in PA but I am applying to U Del and I can only put one address on my common app so I put my PA one but when U Del asks me if I’m a delaware resident and I click yes, would this be lost on them since it does not let me put my second address anywhere. How would I make it clear I’m in state as my parents pay DE taxes and have lived there for 9 years
Talk with the registrar dept at U Del for accurate residency info/requirements:
Isn’t there an option where you can list mailing address (PA ) and home address (Del)?
Some states give instate tuition to a student whose parent is a resident. Colorado does and that parent doesn’t have to claim the student for tax purposes. Other states require the parent to claim the student as a dependent for tax purposes (I think California?).
Even if you can put a Delaware address on the application they may make you prove residency before awarding you instate rates. Going to the PA high school will probably flag your application anyway. It may not be hard to overcome the issue, but you are smart to get your ducks in a row now. If your Delaware parent has to claim you for tax purposes, set that up now. If you need to get a Delaware driver’s license, do that. By the way, YOU can’t be a resident of two states. You can only have one driver’s license, vote in one state, pay taxes as a resident, etc. You can get instate rates for tuition in more than one state (parent’s residency, military, FL grandparent waiver, scholarship waiver), but that’s just a billing issue.
