50 Book Challenge 2009

I thought that something like this would be interesting for us to try to do here (though perhaps it would be better suited for the cafe?) and that it might inspire some of us to read more. Ok, so, basically, on another forum that I post on, there’s a thread titled "[50 book challenge 2009](<a href="http://richarddawkins.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=67839]50">http://richarddawkins.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=67839)," and they do one every year, and the goal is to read 50 full-length books in a given year (though most people in the thread easily surpass a hundred, some 200, and one or two 300). Sooo, the rules for the challenge are as follow:

The only change that I made is in bold, because I considered the original silly. Soooo, is anyone up for trying this out? Use this thread to list what you’ve read thus far in the year and truncate your running list once it gets into the teens. Be sure to include the author along with the title of the book, and feel free to give your impressions on whatever newest books you’ve read when you list them.

LOLOLOLOLOLL okay I’ll post my books so far, if I can remember any of them.

The Dead Don’t Dance - Charles Martin

Maggie - Charles Martin

When Crickets Cry - Charles Martin

Metamorphoses - Ovid (English, and soooon to be in Latin… ewalwkefma)

Breakfast at Tiffany’s - Truman Capote (dunno how long this one is, quite possibly not 100 pages)

The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde

(soon to be) Catch-22 - Joseph Heller

(hmm… lol… now I’m getting foggy and trying to remember what I read in Missouri…) In Cold Blood - Truman Capote

(ooh, what if you started a book last year but finished it this year? lol) The Secret Agent - Joseph Conrad (oh noz!)

I dunno, that’s all I can think of for this year.

Alright, this sounds awesome! I’m definetely in. I’m kind of forgetting a lot of the books I read in January, so I’ll start with the ones I did in the last few weeks.

The Carlyle’s #1 - Cecily Von Ziegesar

Persuasion - Jane Austen

Bah, I wish I had more time to read.

Ugh, all I do is read. Too much free time =/

The It Girl (whichever was the most recent) - Cecily Von Ziegesar

Airman - Eoin Colfer

Sacred Canopy - Berger

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll

Frankenstein - Mary Shelley

Artemis Fowl (whichever is the most recent) - Colfer

Chains - Laurie Halse Anderson

Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - Stevenson

Ghost Girl - Hardenson…or something

Wayside Stories - Sacher

Barnaby Grimes

The Bloody Chamber - Carter (not sure if that’s 100 pages)

Lock and Key - Dessen

The Carlyles, 1 - Ziegesar

The Secrets of Jin-Shei - Alexander

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #1

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #2

The Mysterious Benedict Society - Stewart

Pardon if I’ve butchered names

Waaaaay too busy with school to be able to have time to read.

Cool idea. I’m probably going to make the most progress in the summer haha

Catch-22 - Joseph Heller

The Sum of All Fears - Tom Clancy

In progress: From Beirut to Jerusalem - Thomas L. Friedman

(This isn’t necessarily in order- just the order of what i remember reading)

Pigs Don’t Fly - Mary Brown

City of Ember - Jeanne DuPrau

The Other Boleyn Girl - Phillipa Greggory

Artemis Fowl: the Time Paradox - Eoin Colfer

The Lady Elizabeth - Alison Weir

oooohhh I like this idea. So far I’ve read:

1.) The Diary of Anais Nin
2.) A Spy in the House of Love- Anais Nin
3.) Full Woman, Freshly Apple, Hot Moon- Pablo Neruda
4.) A Guide to the Beats (i don’t know the author, but it’s basically a biography of all the beat poets)

So I can read all the harry potter books 7 times thn read th first one 8 and I’ll be good. awesome

1 Dante’s Inferno
2 Vanity Fair
&& I’m currently reading My Antonia & Paradise Lost, and will read Oedipus within the next two weeks

How is 50 100 page books in a year a challenge?

Also, I think I should be able to count War and Peace (which I’m thinking I’ll finish this year) as 14 books.

I’ve read books of 100 pages that take way longer to get through than war and peace, lol.

Srsly, we’re not competing here, but if you want to find 100 page books and read only those for the sole purpose of being able to say that you’ve read them then… go for it? If you pick longer books to read, you’re still the one that picked them, lol.

Plus, your list will reflect what you read. If you’re worried about impressing people, then 5 college and up level books will look a helluva lot more impressive than 100 Dr. Seuss books, lol.

As to why it was set at 50, I’m just going by tradition. Plus, 50 is a nice, round number, and divides fairly well into the year, so that it evens out to roughly a book per week ;]

Anywho, my current list is:

The Stranger by Albert Camus

Forward the Foundation by Isaac Asimov

The Life of Pi by Yann Martel

The Complete Short Stories Volume 1 by Isaac Asimov

Guide to the John Muir Trail by Thomas Winnett

Robot Visions by Isaac Asimov

Thomas Jefferson: Author of America by Christopher Hitchens

The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad

The Beach by Alex Garland

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court by Mark Twain

The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain

And I just got The Extended Phenotype and The Ancestor’s Tale by Dawkins and The Logic of Scientific Discovery by Popper from the library, so I’m reading them now ;]

this thread has the doubly amazing benefit of giving me lots of great summer reading ideas! :P

That took way too long to compile, and I only listed series that I completely finished and not stuff I picked up and got bored of after a few books. I can’t think of everything either.

and other random crap. some of these series took a week and some of them took 2 months. I read every night before I go to sleep for a few hours.

edit:

some of these series were utterly juvenile crap that I would not recommend, but they were the series that I finished in a week anyway so they don’t make up the majority of the list.
