50% data for admissions

If you are at the bottom of the 50% data, have good ec’s , essay and have worked your entire high school time…what are the chances of admission?

depends on what you mean by bottom 50% really.

I agree with aforautumn, what do you mean by bottom 50%? Do you mean GPA/Standardized test score wise?

its also unclear where in the bottom 50% they would be, assuming GPA or SAT score. if OP is 48th percentile, thats very different than 15th percentile.

A few facts to put the numbers into context: For the class of 2015 last year’s means for GPA, SAT and ACT scores were as follows:
GPA-4.30
SAT-1963
ACT 30
Last year saw about 29469 applications and about 11,340 admits covering Fall,Summer B and Spring. The class was targeted at 6,400 but ended up with 6,500 students. Thus for 2012 the total number of admits is targeted at about 11,000 for a projected class size of 6300. there are about 33,000 applications so if the 11,000 number is correct that is an acceptance yield of 33%. From the 11,000 will be athletic scholarship students and “Talented Twenty” admits which are the top GPA students from Florida public schools nominated by their principal. They are guaranteed admission to one of Florida’s 4 year public universities although not necessarily their first choice. As to how many are athletic scholarship or Talented Twenty admits are included in the 11,000 is unknown but others have commented that it could be as many as 500-600 students.
What does this all mean? That as is said every year the competition will be at an all-time high for acceptance. Thus, those whose GPA and/or SAT/ACT scores are more than one statistical deviation below the mean will have a difficult time getting accepted. That is not to say that it does not happen, just that the odds are much longer. Thus the essay and EC’s will be more important than ever for those on the margin of the accepted range of the mean average. Also, it appears that ther highest stats students will be admitted for Fall, then Summer B and Spring unless a student expressly picks a enrollment time other than Fall.

Danielle2400, forgive me but higher math was never my strong suit. What exactly is “one statistical deviation below the mean” in this case? TIA! :)

Well, I guess my 4.0 gpa and my 28 act doesnt give me a shot in hell of getting in. I could have had shakespeare write my essay and it would not have mattered.

You have a fair chance. There are a large percentage of students with similar stats to yours that get accepted. UF likes well rounded students as much as high stats. You will know for sure 10 Feb. Good luck!

4.0 and a 28 gives you very decent odds of getting in. you might have marginally below average stats for admitted students, but you have much higher than average stats for applicants.

Aforautum-
Taking your theory into practice, how would you compare
the following two separate applicants and essentially the
same factors except for their grades and SAT scores?

1 GPA weighed 3.9 SAT 1980

2 GPA weighed 3.9 SAT 2140

one has a higher SAT score than the other. i’m not sure what you’re asking for exactly.

It also depends upon where you are within the state. UF seeks to maintain geographical diversity within the state. To put it bluntly, it is rare to be admitted with less than a 1250 M/CR SAT and 3.8 wGPA from Broward County but my daughter at UF met MANY with lower stats than that from other parts of Florida ( like the western panhandle and other less populated areas.

It’s really hard to look at someone’s sat/act score and gpa without knowing the story. hopefully I was able to tell my story in my application. I needed to work in order to earn a few bucks so alot of folks are out studying at the library while im at work , I also started a business and I hope that I showed an interest in that business from my application. My person doesnt begin and end with my 4.0 adjusted gpa and my 28 act, its just a part of my story. I also took about 25 ap aice or honors courses so I showed that I was always challenging myself. Did I get an a in every course. NO…I did not. But I could have taken an honors course and gotten an A where I took an AP course and got a B. I was also very involved in my church and my school and also found some time to go and intern at the community hospital to see if a hospital environment is something that I would like considering that I want to be a nurse. Dont you think that you know me better from that little blurb than from me telling you I had a 4.0 and a 28 act score.

Some schools look at gpa and scores only. UF says they do a holistic review which makes for an interesting group of intelligent kids to be offered enrollment. I hope Im one of them .

I could go through a detailed explanation of how you calculate the mean and then one staitistical deviation from that mean, but I think it beyond the scope of the information you are requesting. If you want I can PM the method of calculation to you.

Last year’s GPA mean was 4.30 using the UF method of calculation. Given the nature of this year’s applicant class the mean may reach 4.32-4.33. If the mean reaches that point then as a guestimate the level of one statistical deviation below the mean would be a GPA of about 4.26-4.27. I can only guestimate without the actual data. Remember it is not a simple mathematical calculation as to who is admitted. There are sport scholarship students, Talented Twenty students, and a geographical overlay which UF uses to insure certain number of students are admitted from each Florida county based upon population and a number of other factors. For those on the margin of the mean the essay and EC’s will by very important. In some cases the essay really is the determining factor. Because UF does not consider teacher recommendations they have to rely on the essay and the EC’s to
figure out their sense of your character, personal qualities and how you fit into the overall
composition of the freshman class.

Contains all information required to determine probability of acceptance

How to interpret 50% range

GPA low 4.0 high 4.4

25 of 100 accepted have GPA below 4.0 25 of 100 accepted have GPA above 4.4

Positive scenario 4.41 GPA- your score is higher than 75 of 100 accepted students- good bet

SAT V 570 670
SAT M 590 690

Use the same approach to determine your odds on SAT scores.

We would be wealthy if we placed bets of acceptance for any one with a GPA above 4.41 and V above 671 and M above 691

Standard Deviation - SD measures dispersions of scores around the average. 68% of all scores will fall +1 SD and -1 SD around the average.

SAT Average 500 SD 100 68% of all scores fall within 400-600 range-14% fall between 600-700 -2% fall between 700-800
