500 Character Personal Statement?

What is a college looking for when they ask for a 500 Character personal statement?

Who are you and what makes you distinct . . . self explanatory man.

Got it. The 500 Character limit just threw me. Would you recommend complete sentences, etc. or phrases of description?

It’s a 500 word essay.

chedva: it might be a 500 character personal statement-- this would be significantly different than a 500 word personal statement.

OP: see this as an exercise that the school wants to see how you perform. Good luck to you

No, it’s not that the school wants to see how you perform. It’s that the school wants to know something about the applicant that is not apparent through the rest of the application.

Let’s say it’s a blind date. You’ve gotten through all the basic stuff (name, age, what you do, etc.) What is it that you want your date to know about you so that you can get a second date? That’s your 500 word statement. (And I believe it’s 500 words, not characters.)

Chedva: I agree w/you. I’m basing my “school exercise” statement based on the assumption that it’s a 500 character question. I agree that a 500 word essay would be different.
