<p>ok, what’s the difference between 1 DIMM and 2 DIMM.</p>
<p>both 512 MB 1 DIMM and 512 MB 2 DIMM are the same price most of the time. however, in some cases the 1 DIMM has been $100 more. which should i get? </p>
<p>dell says the 512 1 DIMM is recommended, even though the 2 DIMM is the same price on their website, but i don’t know the difference between the two at all.</p>

<p>1 DIMM = One Dual Inline Memory Module</p>
<p>motherboards only have a certain amount of slots for RAM. One module takes up one slot. 2x256 - as is likely - or 512 2 Dimm will mean you will most likely have 2 256MB sticks that will take up 2 slots. This means your options for upgrading memory are more limited down the line. My motherboard has 4 slots. If it does not cost more i’d go with 1 DIMM - if it does cost more i’d go with 2. Why? Because with 100 dollars you can go ahead and buy over 512MB yourself! Trust me on this. </p>

<p>The only possible benefit of having 2 dimms is if you have a dual channel chipset - but this cannot be determined without specific info about the computer in question. In any case it is not worth 100 dollars to get 1 dimm of 512 beacuse you can buy that for 40 bucks from the link I posted above. That is dell trying to rip you off - and they are easy to install.</p>

<p>For me, even if it costs a little more I’d go with 1 dimm since you will pay less in the future when you upgrade your computer, especially if it’s a laptop since there might only be 2 slots.</p>
