529s and pre-college programs

When I was looking at some info for summer programs at colleges aimed at high schoolers, I saw a comment that 529s can be used to pay for some of them, but it’s unclear to me what the criteria are. Is anyone familiar with this? Does it have to be a program that gives them credit from the college, or are there other criteria?

Here’s some dos and Don’ts - not sure if yours is covered.

Your specific program would also know if 529 funds can be used.

The school must be an eligible educational institution. The school should be able to tell you if it’s an eligible educational institution.

What type of summer program is it?

Looking at some of the architecture programs. Some give college credit and some don’t. Two examples here

Thanks. That page is not entirely clear to me as all its examples seem to be credit-bearing programs, but it’s not explicit if that’s a requirement for using the funds.

@BelknapPoint can 529 accounts be used for programs that do not give college credit?

Simply ask the program you are seeking. They will know. It’s in their best interest if it does.

Or define the program to your 529 customer service. They’ll also know.

See #2 in the first attach. Sounds like you need credit.
