5th year students at UC Irvine

Why do alot of students at UC Irvine end up going here for 5 years. I’ve met so much 5 year students, it’s surprising. Is it just a California university thing or is it just this school? and why?
Also, do u think that YOU may have to say a 5th year?

Please go into detail on your response.!

Well, a lot of fifth years I knew were bio majors who had a lot on their plate or were just double majoring. For bio it’s kind of really common because it’s basically a sequence of classes. You can’t go to the next class without passing the first class, and you’re basically effed when you don’t pass one because they won’t offer it again until the next year or in the summer.

It’s very common for students to change majors, double major, take on a minor or just add on extra classes out of self interest.

Theres also a factor where classes gets full that freshmans wont able to register there required class due to late registrations, I’ve seen those and they have to either take summer classes or wait till next academic year to take the classes. Its very common for bio sci majors since requires classes only offers at certain quarters. Also, some people had a C- or below and end up retaking the class for a better grade, so people do take their time to improve their GPA or else Academic Probation is gonna hit you.

bump bumpppppp

I’m pretty sure you can find super seniors everywhere in CA. Yeah it definitely has to do with your majors and class availability

I’m sure everyone has sufficiently answered your question, no need to bump o_O

Many are bio majors desperate to change direction into anything but bio. It’s the worst major on earth. Hard, boring, no-few quantiative skills, and end up unemployed or washing beakers without a PhD (the real “bio” jobs go to the PhDs, chemists and biomedical or environmental engineers). So alot of bio majors stay for a 5th year to boost their research, improve their GPA or switch/double to chemistry/engineering.
