Hi everyone! This is my first post onto CC. I am in sixth grade going to seventh, and I recently took the SAT. I got a 1640 score
Math:520
CR:540
Writing:580

College Admissions don’t look at 6th grade SAT scores.

Do you have a question? Generally threads are started to discuss issues or ask questions, not only to post personal information.

I meant is this a good score for a sixth grader, and do you have any tips for study books

Your SAT is supposed to rise 50 points each year until you’re 16 I believe. If you study it can be better than that. That is good for sixth grader and okayy for a junior

I think that is above average for a beginning 7th grader. I wouldn’t stress about study books yet. Is there a reason you are taking the SAT this early?

Congrats - Your score is fine. While it won’t be used, I found with one of my kids that as they took the ACT once a year starting in 7th grade, they got used to the format and each year increased pretty dramatically without any study at all. I’d place the score away and then jot down a few things you remember about the test - not the questions, but if you ran out of time on one subject, remind yourself of that…If you felt like there was a lot more Geometry than you expected, write that down - Then the next time you take the test, take a quick look at those notes about a week before taking it to just kind of jog your memory.

I didn’t even know what an SAT was until like 9th grade.

Go to the SAT Prep forum:

This is a FAQ, so rather than posting a new thread, read the sticky thread at the top of the forum and use the Search function.

Seems to me, whether those scores are “good for a sixth grader” depends heavily on what you want to use them for.

What do you want to use them for?

Don’t use a study book, your SAT will naturally improve with time. The earliest you should really be prepping is late sophomore year…

What 6th grader even knows what the SAT test is? Quit worrying about it until you enter high school!

im going to use them for talent searches

What a waste. You should be enjoying your childhood, not taking College boards.

I was in a situation similar to the OP. I was invited to take the SAT in 6th grade as a part of some program or something that gauged talent. The problem was, I had the flu or something the day of the test, so my scores weren’t really any indication of how I would end up doing under normal circumstances.

But to the OP, I will say that for being in 6th grade, you got excellent scores. Although they will not be used in admission, just take pride in the fact that you scored better than 61 percent of test takers, many of whom are in high school.

Why are you worrying about the SATs now? Enjoy your childhood, don’t worry about things that won’t matter for years.

Considering the fact that your in middle school, those are good scores. I wouldn’t be worrying about the SAT too much because your still in middle school. Enjoy your middle school days!

OK, turtwig, if you need SAT scores for talent searches, I get that. And good luck with that!

Trouble is, you’re asking on a message board about colleges. I know next to nothing about talent searches, and I suspect most other posters don’t either. (That’s why you’re getting all these dismissive “just enjoy middle school” comments. That’s reasonable college advice, but it doesn’t take talent searches into account.) What we know is that a 1640 won’t get you into Princeton. But that’s okay in your case because Princeton doesn’t have a seventh grade.

So, if you’re asking whether it’s “good” for talent searches, most of us don’t know. Sorry. But if you’re asking whether getting a 1640 in middle school means you’ll be able to score a 2350 some day, or get into MIT some day…well, that’s an unanswerable question. Honestly, you’d do just as well going to a carnival and asking a fortune teller.

If your major concern is what can these types of scores do for you in a talent search your best bet is to go to the forum for high school issues, primarily summer programs. Your general audience is smaller, however it’s much closer to YOUR audience. These students and parents are a few years ahead of you but may have experience and advise with early SATs, talent searches, and possibly other related issues of interest to you.

In the Summer Programs Forum I did a quick search on “Talent Search” and got many hits, mostly regarding Johns Hopkins CTY, but others were mentioned as well.
