7-Breadth Requirement - UC Berkeley

Is the 7-Breadth requirement necessary for transferring to economics? I heard they may have gotten rid of it for some majors?

It doesn’t say anything about the requirement here:

https://econ.berkeley.edu/undergrad/prospective/transfer-students

It says there are some requirements for the College of Letters and Science here, but doesn’t say anything about the breadth requirements:

What is the Letters and Science reading and composition requirement?

I looked at IGETC on Assist.org and it lists 5-6 Economics classes but the pre-reqs on Assist.org only list Micro and Macro along with some other classes like math. Are these other econ classes required to transfer?

What classes do I need to take before transferring (what exactly do I need to complete before spring semester)? If I completed the pre-reqs is that enough? I am at a 4-year OOS school right now.

Also on the Assist pre-reqs page for Berkeley it lists:

Micro/Macro (Economics 1), some math classes, and statistics classes that can’t be taken at community college.

But on Berkeley’s economics website it lists the above classes and Economics 100?

Is this required?

Or am I getting the classes required to transfer confused with classes required to be part of the major after enrolling (the classes necessary first semester)?

Seems Econ 100 is required before transferring? Why isn’t it listed on Assist.org as a pre-req then?

if you do IGETC then the 7 breadth requirement isn’t necessary. If you don’t, it is.

Econ 100 isn’t necessary before transferring but if you do finish it, it will help.

Thanks.

Is it possible to do the IGETC requirements if I went to an OOS 4 year? It looks like I only need a few classes compared to the 7 breadth requirement. Chances are I will be going to a CCC next semester.

Or can a pre-req class meet the 7 breadth requirement at the same time? For example English literature for the art and literature breadth and the advanced English pre-req.

yes, your prereqs can be used for the 7 breadths or IGETC.

both GE plans are really similar to each other. since you are coming from an OOS 4 year you will have to meet with a counselor after you are accepted to see which of your classes fulfill which requirements, therefore, it is hard for you to try to finish either one.

how do you only need a few more classes for IGETC but need more for 7 breadth?

Thanks for the help. Good to know pre-reqs go towards IGETC and 7 breadths.

I might have been wrong.

I might have four classes left for both. two Sciences, one Humanities, and an English class for IGETC (and language, but I can’t complete that in one semester).

For the 7 breadth requirements I think I need to take an arts and literature class, biological science, international studies, and a physical science. Then there is philosophy and values which I am not sure about but there is a chance a class I took will meet the requirement.

did you take 2 years of a language in hs?

for igetc, if you have satisfied the arts requirement then there is a big chance that that also satisfies the arts and literature requirement for the 7 breadth.

No I didn’t take a language in high school but I wish I had. I took one year of French but didn’t do too well so I didn’t continue taking it. Then I tried again at a community college but again decided not to continue. I will probably just try Spanish this time.

I think I would actually have to take one arts class instead of one humanities, I should have been more clear but I didn’t read that at least one art and one humanities course is required. I took one history class and one other humanities class.

That history class should fulfill the historical studies portion of the 7-breadths requirement and I’m hoping that the other humanities I took fulfills the philosophy and values section.

I think I am going to mainly focus on pre-reqs and the 7 breadths. I already marked on my application that I didn’t complete IGETC plus I won’t have a foreign language done until at least next school year. And I believe the only way to truly complete IGETC is going to a community college or at least that’s what it seems like.

for igetc, you will need a total of three arts and humanities classes, with at least one in each category.

Yeah I did not realize that until after I posted (post #6). You are right though, if I had taken an art it would likely meet both requirements.

For Berkeley economics, admitted transfer students are expected to take at least one of Economics 100A, 100B, 101A, or 101B in the first semester, along with a math or statistics course (at least one of which must be taken at Berkeley – this is usually a statistics course, since most CCs do not have a statistics course with a calculus prerequisite).

Incoming Transfer Students | Department of Economics;

As upper division courses, Economics 100A, 100B, 101A, and 101B are not likely to found as articulated courses at community colleges.

Economics 101A and 101B are the more math-oriented versions intended for those considering going on to a PhD program in economics. Such students should also take multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations (these are available at CCs; check the articulation for math or statistics majors) as well as some more advanced math and statistics courses as described below:

Preparation | Department of Economics;

Since the economics major is in L&S, you need either the 7-course breadth requirement or IGETC.

Thank you for all the help. I was worried when I first saw that Economics 100 was required before transfer because I was unable to find any information on that class (it wasn’t on Assist.org).
