I teach in the GED preparation program at our local community college. Here is our advice:

  1. The Science and Social Studies exams require strong English reading skills, and some Math skills. They don't presume any prior knowledge of the topics - you aren't going to be asked to draw a picture of a cell or to name the major battles in the US Civil War. You are going to be required to read and interpret the information in the question item. So to help develop vocabulary for science and social science topics, choose a prep book that uses at least some of that language in the materials for Language Arts and Math.
  2. The Language Arts section is not easy for non-native speakers, so if you can take a beginning or intermediate ESOL reading and writing class before starting your GED prep, do that. You will find the prep a lot easier.
  3. Take the Test Previews for the exams (click on "Study" at the top of the Study Guides page linked above) to get a notion of what you might need to focus on in your exam prep.
  4. The GED Ready Practice Tests do give very accurate estimates of your final scores. So when you think you might be ready to take the real tests, take the GED Ready test first. You will get an estimated score, and a print out of areas of weakness.

Some states offer the option of completing an Adult High School Diploma program. If that is offered in your state, it might be the fastest way for you to finish high school. So check that out too.
