Last June, I received a 770 on the Physics SAT II as a freshman. I was just wondering, is this good enough for HYPS. I want to know if I should report it, so I do not have to take any other Science subject tests, or whether I should retake it.'

I know that the test has a huge curve like Math II and it isn’t hard to get an 800, so I want to know if a 770 is really that significant. Thanks…

This is good enough for HYPS. 700+ is acceptable most of the time, but a 770 is very competitive, especially because physics is a notoriously difficult exam. Report it when it comes time (I don’t think HYPS allows you to score choice anyway), and ace the math 2 exam, which has a GREATT curve!

“physics is a notoriously difficult exam”
I doubt on this. My take is that the definition of “notorious physics test” comes from the preconceptions held by a lot of people that physics is supposed to be a daunting subject, but it really isn’t. SAT II Literature would be more “notorious” when it comes to harsh curves and difficult questions.

Anyway, 770 in the Physics exam is a fairly competitive score. The difference from a perfect score at that point is merely 30 points, and HYPS adcoms wouldn’t care if you hadd 800 or 770. Congrats on your high scores b/c it will be a boost in your admissions.

My son took the physics SAT II and the Math II SAT II in 8th grade. He got an 800 on the physics and a 760 on the math. He is retaking the math in May (he’s a junior). We both feel that, because of his math background, he should definitely have an 800.

I would say you have time to see what scores you get on your other SAT II test(s) and you have time to assess whether or not you should retake it. I’m sure you could get an 800 on it if you retook it but maybe you can use that $23 for something else.

What are your strongest subject areas? If physics is a strength, you might want to take it again but if you have other areas that are even stronger, a 770 would be a great score to keep. My son will keep his 730 in literature along with his (presumably) two 800s and possibly take chem SAT II in the fall.
