Hmmm. Not what I expected in getting caught up with the crash. Perhaps we could fork this thread to something like “The Racism Thread.”

It is obvious since you have not walked in my shoes why it isn’t offensive to you. I’m sure if you did, you wouldn’t find it so funny. This is my opinion only perhaps other Asians might not take it the same way.

Anyways, I normally do not post about such serious matters because of the negativity that arises. I live my life following the Golden Rule and what do they say about Karma – yeah, I believe in that too!

So moving on…

There is no singular “Asian language,” not even close.

German (can’t use some of the words thrown at me back in the 70"s)-Polock, weird accented parents, funny brown bread in my lunch, home made clothes…blond…only female in male dominated field of study and subsequent professional environment…OMG the things I’ve had hurled at me in my lifetime…I could spend the better part of my days being insulted (yes, still) and chasing the bullies in my life…

I guess the only resolution is to have speech codes (like they do on so many campuses). Let’s feed the PC industrial complex…

Good grief what an exhausting way to live that would be…smile, wave…live a good and productive life…it’s the best revenge.

So some Asians and Asian Americans are stating that they find this racist and are bothered by it.

There is no arguing with this. It is fact.

So anyway, how bout dem Yankees?

Moving on…

So do you think Jeter will ever return to the regular line-up?

I thought it was funny. Try being a lawyer!

I think that’s known on the Internet as a flounce.

Dang lawyers! Hey, how about being an attorney for the IRS? Now that’s a tough one.

busdriver - I thought you declared you were getting out a few pages back. I don’t know why people declare. They can just go. No?

No such luck, Iglooo. I said I was outta there, actually because I needed to go running. Should I leave?

The only thing I find hilarious on this thread is the utter predictability of the outrage with which some people are reacting to those who dare to suggest that there could possibly be anything racist about jokes that depend on “funny” fake-Asian names that don’t even look remotely Korean – but all those Asian names are basically alike, right? – and are meant to convey (don’t try to tell me they aren’t) the image of confused morons in the cockpit speaking pidgin English. (Kind of like the “jokes” that were all over the Internet the day after the crash about Asians being bad drivers.) These kinds of jokes were racist when I first heard them back in the 1970’s, although they were usually supposed to be directed at Chinese and especially Vietnamese people, usually involving lots of Dongs and Dungs and Lows and Flungs and Hungs and Longs in various combinations.

I think some people here would be much happier if they could take a time machine back a hundred years or so ago, when anyone could make all the ethnic and racial jokes they liked without fear of anyone being so presumptuous as to criticize them. Seriously, though, I don’t understand why it’s so difficult to accept the fact that someone of a particular racial or ethnic group might be offended by jokes that make fun of them (or the way their names or language or appearances supposedly sound or look), and why people can’t simply say “OK, sorry I offended you,” instead of going on the typical “PC PC PC lighten up you’re so thinskinned whatsamatta can’t anyone take a joke anymore you must be looking to be offended what’s the world coming to PC PC PC” rant that always happens. As if daring to utter the word “racist” to describe a joke is a far worse offense than the underlying joke that evoked that reaction.

I think people were trying to steer this thread out of negative territory. Sometimes a joke is just a joke, without being colored by a negative, vicious agenda.

On that note, I really am outta here. Life is too short for this.

Great posts HI Mom.

I didn’t think that at all. Never crossed my mind. To return to the Car Talk example, what are they “making fun of” there? No one: it is a play on words. Period. That is the way I took this.

If it struck me as an attempt at racist humor, I wouldn’t have found it funny.

I thought it was hysterical. I just had a group of Chinese friends over at my place for dinner. They thought it was funny that those broadcaster didn’t even know it was a hoax, and the way they were reading it so ssslllooowwwllly to make sure there was no mistake. Come on, you had to be an idiot not to know.

If it was my kid (the summer intern), I might try to keep a straight face to tell her it was a mistake, but not really. I am sure the intern thought no one could be that stupid not to catch on right away. Sense of humor is a sign of intelligence.

Oh puleeze. Those of you born without a humor gene need to lighten up and stop the faux outrage. Satire is funny. Tasteless, sure. But very funny. Oldfort gets it.

Exactly - Car Talk is a perfect example and I haven’t heard the Irish/Scotts/Britts pulling the offended card.

Because I’m not sorry and since I’m not a company with a PR issue to worry about, I don’t have to spew out faux contrition.

I’m Asian and part of what makes conversation interesting with my friends, family, and coworkers is that we can have exchanges like this and come out laughing.

BTW, you do know the most common way to refer to a Westerner in Hong Kong was “gweilo” or “foreign devil”. At at least when I lived there, the PC police wasn’t running amuck teaching the locals to call them “Westerners who are residents of HK” or some such “proper” term, and I don’t recall anybody being offended.

My DH said when he grew up in Asia, he, his family and the other caucasins were referred to as “round eyes”.

There are those who will be easily outragesd or claim outrage, by any thing, and others who will not be offended by joking and teasing and satirical humor. Heard my share of JAP jokes and borscht belt humor. It really can be very funny. I dont personalize it. It makes life a lot easier.

Speaking of airplanes…offensive or not? Discuss.
