I have very little chance of getting into my reach/dream schools. I feel like there is absolutely nothing else I can do at this point. Do 7th term matter in terms of helping one get in or is it just a barrier to make sure one dosnt drop? [There is a big difference between the two].
I feel awful. Just want to know if there is still at least a tiny door crack before it finally shuts.

Well, working’s good, dying a bit excessive. Your 7th term will be considered. If your grades are the weak point in your app, you may be wait-listed. At that point, your 7th and 8th terms are critical. Also, there is just a change that you might learn something, perhaps, that would help you have a successful first year at college (I know, I know, just a mom talking.)

It’s not unusual with all the extra work that one must do, plus winter blues coming on, to lose heart about things such as the prospect of getting into a reach school. April really does seem far away. Try not to let it get you down, though.

Your 7th term scores are important. Colleges want to see that your junior year was not a fluke, and that you can at least keep up the level while under the additional pressures of (a) applying to colleges and (b) senioritis. And if your 8th term grades plummet, a school (yes, even a “safety school”) couild withdraw its acceptance.

Things may look better once all the applications are mailed. Meanwhile, have a good Thanksgiving.

I warn you in advance that some might find this post offensive. Given that disclaimer, here’s my opinion on the matter. The most prestigious universities are academically rigorous. If you go there you will work hard. So if you want to slack off now, why bother going there? If you don’t really enjoy working hard, why spend another 4 years torturing yourself pretending to be something you’re not? That might sound really cruel, and I apologize to anyone that I offended, but seriously, why go to a place where you will have to work hard if you don’t want to work hard? I just don’t get why everyone thinks that now they are seniors they don’t have to work. You will still have classes for the next 4 years of your life and the skills and knowledge that you learn this year will help you with those classes. I’ve always thought that learning is valuable in itself, not just as a means to some desired end.

That said, I would think that those 7th term grades are important. Since many students probably do slack off senior year, even 1st semester senior year, I’d imagine keeping up high grades would help, maybe even a significant amount. However, with EA/ED schools they don’t always see how you are doing 1st quarter… so who knows? In theory, your classes get harder each year, so what you’re doing senior year would be closest to what you will do next year. If adcoms believe that, then 1st semester senior grades would be pretty important, don’t ya think?
