8,000

Since Northwestern has a population of 8,000, are individuals obscured in the whole community. Is there a real sense of community and camaderie, or is it more like a state school.

8,000 isn’t that big when you compare to it to actual state schools like UC Berkeley and UCLA (22,000 and 26,000). Obviously, NU is not a small school, but it’s not that big either.

8,000 is actually still in the mid size range, and when you consider its broken up into the different colleges (4,000 in WCAS, though from my understanding the school distinctions have little bearing on life on campus).

NU is big enough where you won’t know/recognize nearly everyone, but still small enough where you will recognize a good chunk of the student body.

While there is somewhat of a North/Side divide (North - techies and fraternities; South - theatre/lib arts) - students do intermingle quite a bit (esp. on “party nites”).

k&s has got it right on, a lot of north/south divide is evident
