There are about 30 PhD students total in my program- across all years- so we’re pretty close. At least one of us has been in every major natural disaster that’s hit north America this year. Thankfully no one’s been seriously hurt but I don’t know how our luck is going to hold.
My heart once again breaks for everyone affected.
How terrible. Recent events are certainly going to be fodder for the Armageddon/End Times types.
And such types will be wrong yet again.
This kind of thing–earthquakes plus torrential rains–creates mudslides in places like Guatemala, that can bury entire villages. Horrific.
What all of these things show is the power of nature unleashed. Anytime Gaia decides to rid herself of us, she can.

The first thing form our “friend” in my inbox- it is the eclipse, folks. How did that email get through? I thought I had it blocked.
We were in Guatemala a couple of years ago during a 4.6 (+/-0) earthquake in Chiapas and definitely felt it. I can only imagine experiencing an 8. My heart goes out to those affected.
