Ok, first off, I’m Asian and trying to evade the typical stereotypical math/sci label because I’m honestly not very good at math. In trying to emphasize that humanities are my focus, I happened to score 800’s on SATI and Math II which doesn’t help the cause. However, (since I’m bad at math) I got 2 B’s in AP Calc BC last year and probably a bad AP score (3 or 4 at most though not likely).

So my question is: What are admissions officers supposed to think? At first I was really worried about those B’s on my transcript but coupled with those seemingly good math scores, how would you make sense out of the situation? Or are SAT maths not even comparable to a higher-level, calc course?

Perhaps this is an unanswerable, useless thread, but I just was wondering how these conflicting scores could affect me… so yeah. Thanks for any input!

A “B” in AP calculus isn’t a bad grade. Plenty of people get into Ivies with some Bs.

AP scores don’t matter for admission. They matter for placement. College admission officers also know that one can have a bad day – be sick, for instance – and get a very low AP score.

My 800/780 Math SAT scorer got a B and a C in Calculus BC, and a 3 on the exam (although it was senior year, so colleges never saw the C or the 3 until after the admission season was over). He wasn’t the only high test scorer in his class with that experience. The moral of the story is that it is probably much more common than you think.

I would say that you are pretty darn good at math from your SAT’s.

I just wanted to add that you don’t have to send AP scores anywhere, anyway. They can be used later, when you are thinking about placement, but there are also placement exams. Also, many students take a level easier than the level they qualify for from the AP score.

I would be more concerned if you had a 98 in AP calc and then got a 1 on the AP exam. Inconsistencies like that raise questions. But your high scores on the SAT I and II are on exams that cover different math topics that the AP Calc. I would not be concerned.

Wow…as soon as Harvard sees those B’s they’ll toss your application file in the ever-present bonfire burning just outside the adcom room. But good luck anyway!
