800 on SAT Math, but 78 in a competitive science/math-field highschool=no chances??

<p>Here’s my problem…I’m not a ‘math genious’, but I was pretty confident that I’m above average when it comes to math…I scored an 800 on SAT math and scored perfect 100’s in Pre-AP Geometry my freshmen year and a 99 in Pre-AP Algrebra II my sophomore year in a U.S. highschool…but then I got a 78 in my S. Korean science/math school…will that absolutely annihilate my chances of getting into a competitive university?</p>

<p>My other Stats:
750 CR, 780W, 800M
Haven’t taken SAT II yet but I’m expecting/hoping for above 750 on all three
Class rank:
Freshmen-1st in all Pre-AP classes (AP wasn’t offered to freshmen)
Sophomore-2/701 in S. Korea
Junior- probably 4~5/695
(these rankings are based on a composite of all subjects since in S. Korea all highschool students take exactly the same subjects)</p>

<p>E/C’s:
-Newspaper: editor-in-chief
-founder of J. Pierian Springs: an educational program where our club prints educational documents in English
-Choir: 10TH-head soprano/soloist; 11TH-vice president/soloist (our choir is pretty prominent: first in district for several consecutive years, first in regionals for several consecutive years, and third in nationals; 12TH- most likely president
-School’s official Music Director (I oversee all musical (?) events)
-Student government: 10TH- manager of general affairs; 11TH- chief executive of academic affairs; 12TH- hopefully VP or president
-Church: youth leader(President), piano accompanist
-I’m also tutoring children in English for free</p>

<p>Awards:
-Singing Contests (First prize in district, Grand prize in district, hopefully first prize in nationals), Scholar of the month, Reflections Historic Art Best of Show, English Honors, Advanced Music Honors, two Independence Recognitions awards (my school gives this award to one person in each class every year, I received them for two consecutive years), Chemistry Olympiad, entering S. Korea Science Festival this summer and expecting some kind of award</p>

<p>Now back to my problem:
I attend a science/math field highschool in S. Korea, and ever since last year, S. Korea’s education system went berserk and is requiring highschools to make their tests harder (Korea has adopted a new policy called the ‘ranking system’ in order to abolish all inflation).
In my highschool, the teachers are overdoing it…the class average is generally in the 50’s!!!that’s insane!!the highest grade is often in the 80’s!! No inflation whatsoever.
Anyway, because I go to such a mad school, my grades are far from perfect…but I still managed to get a 99 in English and Geology(both ranked 1/695); a 98 in Chemistry(3/695) and Chinese; 95’s in ‘Athletics and Health’ and Humanities; a 90 in Biology and Korean Literature; and a mid 80’s in Physics which still places me in the top 15% or so…</p>

<p>My math grade…a 78 places me as 59th…so when you just consider class rank it isn’t that bad…but the fact that it’s a C is what kills me…so what should I do???
Should I just give up any hope of getting into say Berkeley or Stanford (I know…it sound impossible)
Do colleges overlook a 78 as long as the ranking isn’t horrible??
Please say they do…T.T</p>

<p>beprepn…what do you mean obvious? Do you mean obvious as “no you have no chances” or “yes you do”? I’m sorry for being ignorant but that C is really plaguing me, and I just want to know how much it will harm me…anyway, thanks for the replies:)</p>

<p>Hell no it won’t hurt your chances. It doesn’t factor into admissions at any point. The SAT, on the other hand, does. Give us a break, yo.</p>

<p>Class rank <em>does</em> factor into admissions. Really, it does. But if you are in the 99th percentile on your SAT and you have an excellent GPA but nevertheless are not in the top 50% of your class, the schools will make the (correct) assumption that your school is just ridiculously good. You won’t be penalized for this.</p>

<p>So what you’re saying is…the SAT score (and percentile) is basically the standard on which colleges evaluate their applicants?</p>

<p>and gpa but colleges know that your school is rigorous.

<p>You will be fine. Schools look at everything to get a complete picture, and they do understand that not all high schools are equal.</p>
