8th grade award

Hi-
Please weigh in- D was a NJ Finalist in the Scripps Spelling Bee. It is 8th grade but, should we include this on her list of awards at the bottom. She is going into the communications field.

I would say yes if she has received any awards in 9-12th grade in other competitions because it would show growth and continued achievement.
However if it is her only award I would say no - because it looks as if she has done nothing since 8th grade.
Just my 2 cents.

By “Finalist,” what do you mean, artspeak? If your daughter participated in the National Spelling Bee, I’d say it’s worth putting it in. If she was among the “finalists” in the National Spelling Bee, then it would be even better. If she was a Finalist in NJ, but did not go to the National Bee, then I’d say she should not include it, unless she competed in the same NJ Bee with Kerry Close, in which case she should mention that too.

I would totally mention it unless, as Mom2424 said, it’s the only award.

If she doesn’t want to included it in “Awards” could the experience be mentioned in her essay? My D was a competitive dancer for 6 years, but only 2 of those were in HS…she made reference to it in her essay, showing that it was a long term commitment, even if it didn’t last throughout HS.
