8th grader SAT 1540/1600 with essay 5/5/5

My 8th grader took the SAT and got 1540 out of 1600 with essay 5/5/5. Is there any scholarship available for going to some engineering or computer science summer camps?

MITES.

No scholarship, but they’d be eligible for Davidson THINK. My kid loved that experience.

Duke TIP, Northwestern University & Johns Hopkins University also have summer programs. Admission may be limited not only by testing in the top 5%, but also by the region of the country served by that particular university’s program. I do not know whether or not scholarship awards are available.

MITES is free, but acceptance rate is about 4%.

@cxw94086 : What region of the country do you live in ?

Has your child been asked to skip a grade ? Not clear as to whether the student is entering 8th or ninth grade, but some areas of the country have academically demanding private prep schools which offer merit scholarships & financial aid.

MITES = Minority Introduction To Engineering & Science www.pathwaystoscience.org

Thanks for the info. My child was not asked to skip a grade. He is entering the 9th grade. We don’t want him to go to a private high school as we like to have him at home for high school before he goes to a college.

There is very little scholarship money available, even with those scores. I’m assuming he took the test as part of one of the major Gifted and Talented identification programs (Duke TIP, JHU’s CTY). I know CTY sometimes offers scholarships to some of the top scorers, but most also have income limits, and some are targeted to various underrepresented groups (low income, minorities, females in STEM programs).

There are local private schools. Regardless, it seems odd to me that he has not been asked to skip a grade. Is he excelling in all classwork ? Is the school aware of his test results ?

Many private high schools are not boarding schools.

Most private high schools are not boarding schools. And very very few boarding schools in the US are 100% boarding.

He has been an A+ student across board in all school work, except PE with 'A’s. He has won national math competition with a bronze medal and a first place in chapter round’s math competition. He has self-taught to program in javaScript and Java. I am hoping he can get some scholarship to do some computer science / engineering research summer camps next year.

Well if you can t afford to send him anywhere look for local programs at a university near you if that is possibke.
