Personal Statement

As a student from the English Department of Foreign Language College at Xiamen University, I am applying for the Exchange Student Program at Willamette University from August 2010 to December 2010. In this essay I outline my own personality, experiences and achievements, and also discuss the motivation to apply for this program,

The high school from which I graduated is a prestigious school in China known for its teaching goal of integrated and all-round graduates. So as one of the top students there, I have developed various interests in most subjects and managed to handle them well. During the first and half years in Xiamen University, I did an excellent job in English skills, mathematics, Chinese, and elective courses such as accounting basics, ranking NO.1 in my grade. But I always see my major English as only a tool of communication and much as I like it, my real interest lies in mathematics and economics. Since my mother is an international business woman and my father has studied mathematics for 10 years, I was greatly influenced by their passion in their fields. I believe with the excellent ability of mathematical analysis, I will be able to have a deeper insight into the international economics. As a result, I chose mathematics as my minor and have been studying it for over a year. This learning process gave me a new understanding of this subject as an efficient and logical way of thinking and solving the problems. Though the science of mathematics has been quite intricate and obscure for an English-major student, for I have little basic knowledge of advanced mathematics, I persisted with great effort. I spent numerous nights in the library studying the theories and solving problems, while more than half of the students dropped this course on the way. Once I am determined to do it, I will not give up easily. Finally, my hard work earned its reward; I got the third prize in the 29th “Jingrun Cup” Math Contest of Xiamen University.

Besides my academic achievements, I took part in different kinds of activities in the university. For example, I held the 2010 Girl’s Festival of Foreign Language College. This is a remarkable experience because in the preparing process I learned how to negotiate with others, how to give orders to the junior staff and how to solve a problem when it arises. I believe it will be helpful in the international business negotiation.

I have two very clear goals in going to the Willamette University, to learn the basis of economics from a western prospective and to build a good relationship with students in the Willamette University. Going abroad provides me with a great opportunity to take a close look at the basic principles of western economy. What is more important is that I will get a chance to meet Americans and know about their lives. Cultural differences and diversities have always been my ever-lasting curiosity and I’d like to explore them by my own. In the summer of 2007, I have been on a school excursion to Australia. During the trip I not only improved my English, but also became good friends with my home stay family, the Williams, and has stayed in touch ever since. I am looking forward to making good friends with teachers and students of Willamette University, especially for the university is known for its intimate student relationships and harmonious atmosphere on the campus.

I want to study at Willamette University, as it emphasizes on the serious academic research as well as the strong ties between the student and the teacher that are necessary for exchange students. I have well-developed analytical and mathematical skills along with fluent and proficient English. I feel the help and guidance that can be provided to me by the distinguished faculty of your university will be invaluable and help bring out the best in me.
