Does anyone know of a classic old hotel in the northeast? We usually stay in bed and breakfasts, which are nice, but what I am seeking is a true hotel experience, like in the old movies. Big or small doesn’t matter. Location doesn’t really matter as long as it’s within a one day’s drive of NYC. It could be located in a small town with absolutely nothing to do, or in a big city. The point is to stay in a comfortable room, with lovely surroundings and maybe a nice restaurant or cafe on the first floor. Any ideas?

I know several people who really love the Mohonk Mountain House:
[Hudson Valley Resorts : New York State Hotels, Catskills : Mohonk : Upstate NY Spa Resort](http://www.mohonk.com/)

Driving distance from NYC, I definitely second the Mohonk Mountain House recommendation!!

I’ve never stayed here, but know people who love it! Great Boston location.

The Otesaga in Cooperstown, NY is beautiful, as is the town itself.

Mohonk is spectacular. Pricey but very cool.

Look up the Mountain View Grand Hotel…in New Hampshire. It’s on the road between Lancaster and Whitefield. It’s an old hotel that has undergone a gorgeous renovation. Great service and beautiful view! Lots of amenities on site.

[Inns of Aurora: Lakeside Dining & Accommodations](http://innsofaurora.com/)

This is a small property (10 rooms in one building, 7 in the other), but more hotel than bed and breakfast. We love it! Gorgeous views of Cayuga Lake, beautifully appointed rooms, a real sense of warmth and history, fine service that’s never overbearing, and an excellent restaurant. We’ve never enjoyed a hotel more, and look forward to returning soon.

Can you be a bit more specific what you mean but the “old hotel experience”? We stayed at the Gettysburg Hotel in Gettysburg, PA. Old hotel with a cute restaurant on the main floor.

This place is old, but completely rehabbed and under a 45 minute train ride to NYC. Plus Summit has a cute downtown and it’s a 5 minute drive to the Mall at Short Hills, one of the most high-end malls in the US (& NJ has sales tax on clothes).

The Hay-Adams in Washington, DC for a city experience, or the Sagamore in Bolton Landing, NY (on Lake George) for the opposite. (Mohonk Mountain House is also a great choice.)

Wentworth-by-the-Sea is an old grand hotel that was shuttered until Marriot bought it and restored it. On the harbor on New Castle Island in Portsmouth NH. I haven’t stayed there, but I’ve eaten there and it’s quite nice.

Probably the grandest of the old grand hotels in New Hampshire is the Mount Washington Hotel at Bretton Woods. This place has been restored and is now operated by Omni Hotels. I haven’t stayed there, but the grounds and surrounding area are spectacular. Lots of outdoorsy stuff (skiing, cross country skiing, golf, hiking, etc.) most of the year. Especially nice in the summer and fall foliage seasons!

Thought of another one we’ve stayed at that we loved, the Chatham Bars Inn on Cape Cod. As with the Otesaga, beautiful location, great service, and delicious food.

[Omni Bedford Springs Resort | Pennsylvania Golf & Spa Resort](<a href=“Omni Bedford Springs Resort | Pennsylvania Resorts”>Omni Bedford Springs Resort | Pennsylvania Resorts)

This property was beautifully restored not too long ago; the original hotel was built over 200 years ago. The indoor pool (ca. 1905) was one of the first in the country and is amazing. (All the original tiling is intact, and the pool is still fed by the mineral springs.) We were there over the holidays a few years ago and the decorating was lovely. It’s about a five hours from NYC.

The Sagamore Hotel on Lake George (NY), and the Mount Washington Hotel in NH. Both have that “grand big hotel from another era” feeling.

Completely redone in past 10 years. Cape May is a lovely town w Victorian architecture and cute downtown shops and under 3 hours from NYC.

PS - would second that the Mount Washington has that ‘grand hotel from another era’ feeling. Before I opened the thread it was my first thought, but it’s a good 6 hour drive from NYC and unless you like winter weather, I would only recommend it between May-October.

[The Wauwinet - Nantucket Massachusetts Hotel](http://www.wauwinet.com)

[Home - Hotel Northampton](http://www.hotelnorthampton.com/)

THERE she is! In the small city in western Mass (due north of NYC) that supports Smith College - so a great Main Street experience today.

If you are looking for an “old hotel” flair, I’m not sure the hotel Northhampton is it. However it is doing well and the town is charming.

I’m going to repeat my suggestion to look at the Mountain View Grand in New Hampshire. This is a smaller scale hotel than the Mt Washington at Bretton Woods. Back in the day, families would go to the Mountain View from the cities for vacations. This type of hotel travel went very out of favor and many of the old Hotels fell into disrepair and were torn down. The Mountain View was closed for a number of years…but then was bought and very nicely renovated to be like it was…but with the more modern amenities families expect now. It is a yellow clapboard building with a huge porch spanning the front that has a spectacular view of the mountains. Food is terrific. There is skiing somewhat nearby, and several charming towns. The drive there is amongst the prettiest you could do…through the White Mountains.

Great ideas everyone! Thank you. I’m going to look into all of these.
